I watched my best friend Kat leave the classroom as I worked with my group in biology to finish the worksheet.

After about 10 minutes we were done and class was almost over.

Glancing over to Lucas, a close friend of mine who is in Kat and I's small friend group, and, like always, he's on his phone.

"Lucas," I say. No response.

"Lucas!" Still no response: he's smiling at his phone texting most likely his girlfriend, Elena - another girl in our friend group. They had been dating for over 2 months and were still in the honeymoon phase.

"Lucas!!" I basically yell at him, but finally catch his attention as he his eyes flick up at mine, irritation present on his facial features.

"Dude, what?" He snaps at me

"What do you think Kat went to the principal for?"

"How should I know, she's your best friend. Maybe she's getting expelled?" He says in a serious tone.

"For what, being too smart?" I snort as he breaks into a smile, all remnants of anger gone.

"Exactly, they're putting her into a better school. Not anything like this shit hole" he murmurs so the teacher doesn't hear him. But even if he said it at a regular volume, our teacher is basically hungover everyday. She wouldn't notice a student even if they collapsed on the floor. The only thing she ever pays attention to so far in the school year is the announcements the principal makes everyday within the first 10 minutes of school starting.

I laugh at his comment about our school and how brutally true it is. But the moment the conversation comes to a pause Lucas is back on his phone texting Elena.

I roll my eyes at how sappy he's gotten since they started dating, but if you were to ever say that to his face he'd punch you square in the nose; he's still one of the strongest kids in our grade, after all.

I go on my phone out of boredom and wait the remaining few minutes of the class out playing games.

When the bell finally rings everyone hurries to get their stuff together and leave - if they hadn't already packed up earlier. Lucas and I walk down the hallway getting ready to go to our separate math classes.

Soon enough Elena pops up from around the corner and grabs a hold of Lucas's hand, swinging their arms together as I internally roll my eyes at their corny PDA.

"Elena, you are literally a toddler," I remark as we walk through the hundreds of people trying to get to their own classes. As soon as the word "toddler" leaves my mouth her dirty blonde hair turns quickly and as she stares into my eyes her face transforms into a look of pure anger.

"Yeah, and I'll kick your shins with my little 'toddler' feet, you dick," she spits out and immediately goes back to smiling. It's important for no one to take anything Elena says seriously, she can be mean but that's how you know she considers you a friend. If she's nice to someone, that means she's uncomfortable around them.

Lucas is trying not to smile at his girlfriend's moody behaviors and anger problems. While my eyes get sore from the amount of times I've rolled them at the couple, and it isn't even 10 a.m. yet.

The sappy couple go to their math class together, while I go to mine: algebra 3. I hate math. I am bad at math. Math should only exist for people who want jobs in math.

I endure the painful hour and a half by myself due to none of my friends being in this class.

Eventually I'm in the weight lifting class that's required for certain school athletes to take at this school. Luckily, I have Lucas in this class, so him and I workout and occasionally talk.
