I don't think I'll ever understand why my mum thinks video games are bad for me! Heck, I would have paid to get into a real video game world myself.... up until THE THING happened.
That day, I was playing Minemaster shamelessly when I was supposed to be doing my homework and my mum was getting pissed off, as usual.
"GRIAN! GET OFF THAT STUPID COMPUTER THIS VERY INSTANT OR I'LL SMACK IT AGAINST THE WALL! ITS ALREADY 7:12!" she shrieked.
I ignored her, as usual, and locked my bedroom door. I had to finish building my house and mum wasn't helping at all!
Minemaster's a cool survival game. You first appear in a place called the Overworld. You have to build houses, craft tools, brew potions and even create portals to different dimensions by mining underground and killing monsters for materials. You also have to hunt animals and cook them to live. At night or in dark places, monsters mob you and try to send you back to your respawn point by taking all your precious things in your inventory. Your goal in the game is to travel to the Void Dimension and slay the Void Dragon.
So, anyway, I was trying to access the TNT (a type of dynamite) Dimension because I was running low on TNT. When I lighted the portal, it seemed to be glowing grey instead of the regular red-and-white.
Maybe this is just a visual glitch, I thought. Projang probably would change it in the 1.17.2 update,(fun fact: I come back to change the update every time a new one comes out in Java!) so I just walked into the portal, although I could feel some doubt creeping into my veins. I suddenly felt very sleepy... sleepy...
When I woke up, I was in a landscape full of trees that were oddly shaped. Why do these trees look like they're made out of blocks? I wondered. A horrible thought started to creep into my mind.
No, it can't be, I thought. It's impossible to play a video game with your real body. I decided to look at my hands and that would determine my theory. I looked at my hands and... Oh no! My hands were blocks without fingers! I was stranded in a Minemaster world! I was sure of it! Why would my hands be blocks if I wasn't in Minemaster? What was I doing before I fell asleep? Oh yeah, I was playing Minemaster! This is worse than I thought, I realized. How do I leave this place?
I recalled my friend saying that it would give two options when you killed the Void Dragon. One would let you continue with the server you were in and the other would let you back to the 'worlds' page. Maybe the 'worlds' page is my ticket out of here! I felt relieved because at least I had a goal. I decided to focus on getting some basic tools first and headed west to get some wood.
In the actual game, when you hit a tree's trunk repeatedly, it shows some cracks and drops a tiny version of the wood. I did exactly the same and a piece of wood started floating and flew right into my inventory. It suddenly occurred to me that the physics of Minemaster was actually pretty strange and illogical, because let's face it, trees don't float.
Anyway, I touched the side of my belt and it led to my inventory. I spotted the piece of wood I'd just aquired. I repeated the process until a decent amount of wood was sitting in my inventory. I looked blindingly at the scorching sun and realized that it was already midday. I decided it was best to hunt for a hiding place for the night first and then craft the things I needed. I spotted a small cave at the top of a mountain close to my spawning spot and decided to stay there for the night.
Quickly, I used 4 blocks of wood to craft a crafting table, which would let me create a larger variety of tools. I then made a furnace, and burned some of the logs to make torches and 2 pickaxes. I stood there and contemplated whether I should use a bit more of my few materials to make a sword and shield, which would be useful if I came across some unpleasant hostile monsters, and decided it was worth it. Now armed with torches, my crafting table, some weapons and two pickaxes, I began breaking a rock under me to search for more materials.
