Crash!
All three of your heavy textbooks tumble out of your arms and clang against the metal of your locker. Swearing under your breath, you lean down to pick them up. Just as you're about to hoist the books back up, a rather large sneaker presses against your History book, preventing you from moving it.
"Chen, I can't deal with you today. Just move," you growl, glaring up at your class enemy.
"And why should I do that? I like seeing you like this. Weak, and under my power."
That's it. This is the last straw.
Your fingers wrap around his ankle and pull. Chen falls backwards, landing straight on his ass. His hat goes flying across the floor. You can't help but laugh, even as the principle is barreling towards you two. Your laughter subsides as the man gives you a disappointed frown.
"What is going on here, Miss _____?" He asks in his usual monotoned voice.
"Well...I...."
Chen stands upright, facing the principle head-on.
"I deserved that. I'd like to ask for her to be excused," he said, to your surprise. The principle seems to accept this and wanders off to patrol another hallway.
"Why did you do that?" You mutter, staring at him.
"I don't know. I just felt like it. Don't get used to it," he retorts, shoving his hands in his pockets.
"What the hell do you mean? This is completely out of character for you."
"Well, why don't you just be grateful for what I've done today? Can't you do that?!"
He storms off, scooping his hat up on the way. You watch his retreating form, still feeling confused.
"What happened this time, _____?"
Your classmate, and one of the most sought-after boys in school, is peering down at you, a frown on his handsome features.
"Oh, it's nothing, Jongin. Just dropped my books, that's all."
His dark eyes scan over the scene, and he takes your hands, pulling you up from the ground. Before you can protest, he collects your textbooks, placing them back in your arms.
"Thanks," You sigh, sliding all of the books into the top shelf of my locker.
"Wait, is that a bruise on your cheek?"
Jongin leans in and cups your face, squinting a little to inspect the small yellow bruise just below your eye.
"Oh, that's just from a prank Chen played on me last week...."
His eyes narrow, and suddenly, he hugs you. His strong arms wrap around you, holding you close.
"I hate that kid. He always hurts you," Jongin murmurs against your ear. Your cheeks are warm, and you're not sure how to feel.
"I think...I'm in love with you, _____."
Your heart stops in your chest as you stand in his embrace. You can't muster a sentence.
"By the end of this week, let me know how you feel about me so I'll know whether we have to stay friends, or be more than that."
He presses a soft kiss to your forehead, and then one to your bruise, before walking off.
You have no clue what to do.
As each morning passes, you notice that Chen doesn't make any more rude remarks. He doesn't even look at you. You try to joke with him, but he doesn't respond to you.
Jongin, on the other hand, watches you like a hawk. Every time you're near Chen, his stare hardens.
"Chen, what's wrong with you?" You finally confront him, cornering his against his locker.
"What do you mean, what's wrong with me? I'm fine. Perfectly fine."
"No, you're not. Then, why have you been avoiding me?"
"I haven't avoided you!" He yells, slamming his fist against his locker. When he sees your startled face, his voice softens. "I...I haven't. Why don't you go find Jongin?"
"Wait, is this about Jongin...?"
He blushes, staring down at the ground.
"He treats you better than I ever could, and I hate that."
Once again, you hear your heart in your ears skip a beat, but this time much louder. He reaches out and holds your small hands in his giant ones, finally gaining the courage he'd been searching for all these years.
"I don't hate you, _____. I never have. I...I love you. But, I couldn't figure out how to tell you, so I teased you instead. Sometimes, the teasing gets out of hand, like this."
He lightly traces a finger over the bruise, regret in his eyes.
"But, that's why I've stopped. I don't want to hurt you. I want to protect you instead. I don't want to despise you...I want to show you just how much love I can give you. Please, be mine, and I'll promise to be the best I can."
Your eyes water as you cling to Chen, both arms wrapped around him. He smiles down into your neck, his hands resting on your hips.
"I've been waiting for this for so long. I love you too, Chen."
Jongin watches from just around the corner, the bouquet of daises in his hands dropping to the floor. It's not quite anger that he feels. No, he is disappointed to see you with another man. But, he remembers, it's your happiness that he cares about. Trying to smile for you, he gathers his flowers, turning around and running out of there before you can see him.
