Prologue

1604 B.C.

A group of people gathered in the square in the capital of the newfound country of Kaelan. Everyone in the square was ecstatic having finally having succeeded the many european countries that had colonies on this mid sized island in the mediterranean sea. King Altman and his predecessors have been the real rulers of this country for centuries. The people finally saw reason not very long ago and they fought for their true King! They have listened to many announcements in previous days about their new government, laws, and how this new country was going to work.

It is the year 1604 and men, women and children of all castes gathered waiting to hear the spokesperson of the King release the last document needed for this newfound Monarchy. It was the most exciting and everyone was excited about what the King had decided with the help of the King's counsel. Everyone knew of the arranged marriages that other countries forced the royal members of the family into. King Altman was passionately against this having seen his sister go through the process not long ago. The King's people were so excited to hear how he planned to change this. They needed to know how the firstborn of the royal family would find love that so many people of the higher class never had.

The King's spokesman walked up the wooden stairs the staged and stood in front of the podium ready to project his voice to the crowd. He cleared his throat and spoke loudly and with authority, "It is now the royal decree of Kaelan that the first born will undergo a competition with 18 others. There will be one contestant for every year of age until the competition starts when the first born has reached the marrying age of eighteen. The King and Queen must choose the first nine contestants. The first born will choose the final nine contestants starting at the age of ten years old. The contestants may be from any class, country, or racial background. No one person can be denied for being of lower or higher class, race, or the country from which they are from as long. Anyone can have the chance at winning the heart of a Royal. After a contestant is chosen the firstborn may not have contact with them until the competition. Once the competition starts the prince or princess must spend some time one-on-one with every contestant and the competition must last for the duration of at least 2 months. The first born can get rid of any person after their first one-on-one if they believe they aren't fit for them. The contestants undergo various events during this time. The King's Council selects the most prudent candidates and the unworthy go home. Once the first born has chosen the one they can decide whether or not they would like to go through coronation and become King or Queen. This gives the firstborn the choice of being a ruler and finding love. This is now law in the mighty land of Kaelan." The crowd cheered as the spokesperson ended the reading of the new law and stepped away from the podium.
