It was well past dinner when Elizabeth walks in the door. Her happy expression was instantly replaced by a surprised one.

"Y'all are still awake?" She held her homework close to herself.

"Elizabeth, I told ya to be here before supper." Arthur scolded.

Her blue eyes were at her shoes and she slowly shuffled to sit down at the table. I sat across from her as Arthur sat in the furthest chair on the end.

"Sorry, Pa. I just... well... me and Jack were fishin'." Eliza explained, her smile returning once more.

I raised my eyebrows.

"Catch anything?" I ask, earning a glare from my husband.

"Oh, Mama, we had a great time! I caught two catfishes and he skinned'em and cleaned'em up." Her eyes lit up as she spoke.

"Get your homework done?" Arthur asks.

"Yes sir. Jack helped me. He's really good at spellin'. And his Ma even learnt with us!" She continued.

"Did you thank Aunt Abigail for supper?" I asked.

Elizabeth set her homework on the table and kind of sighed.

"Well... I started a fire and we cooked up the fish. Jack walked me home." She explained.

"You're tellin' me that he still ain't home yet?" Arthur said in a sharp tone.

Elizabeth shrugged.

"Probably not."

"Go to bed. You got school tomorra'. You can take the mule if you want, I s'pose it'll rain." I said, sensing Arthur's anger.

Elizabeth kissed us both goodnight and then went into the other room.

It was silent for awhile before Arthur let out an aggravated sigh.

"Babe, we gotta not freak out. It's her first time havin' a friend. Jack and her have been inseparable." I explained.

"I know. I just... well... nothin'. I'm headin' to bed." Arthur got up.

"Okay. Bright and early in the mornin' for our new job!" I reminded him.

He nodded with a slight smile and walked past me. I grabbed his hand, making him look down at me with confused eyes. I tugged his arm down for him to bend over and I kissed his chin.

"G'night. I'll be in there in a bit." I smiled.

Arthur nodded and sleepily walked to our bedroom and shut the door to undress.

I walked in Elizabeth's room and knocked on the closed door.

"C'min." She answered.

I walked in and sat down on her bed as she sat up. Her hair was brushed out and neatly in a braid once again as always.

"You and Jack have fun?" I asked.

"Yes, ma'am! So much fun!" Elizabeth smiled.

"So... is he sweet on ya? Tell me the truth." I urged.

Eliza bit her lip as she was thinking. And then finally she let out a happy sigh and nodded quickly.

"M'kay. So... are you sweet on him?" I questioned.

"Yes ma'am. We're just... y'know, being kids and being sorta friends but a lil more special." Elizabeth said.

"I see. Now I don't want y'all to be kissin' or holdin' hands all the time. Just friends until you're sixteen." I instructed.

Elizabeth's eyes lit up even more at my words.

"Wait so... in two months... we can be sweethearts?!" Eliza asked.

I nodded slowly. I... I forgot her birthday was that close. Damn.

"Thank ya, Mama!" She smiled.

"Yeah yeah. Go to bed." I kissed her head and shut the door as I left.

I opened my door and undressed and put a nightgown on. Then I laid by Arthur.

He was fast asleep. His face was peaceful and he had a content look on his handsome face. I kissed his forehead and then turned my back on him to get comfortable and sleep. I felt my leg exposed and I quickly pulled it under the covers....

I dont fuck with my leg outside the covers.

I felt Arthur wrap his strong arm around me and pull me close.

I smiled and fell asleep, happy.
