Chapter 9

The first thing Nolana noticed was there wasn't something behind her keeping her warm in the night. The second thing she noticed was Arailm sleeping upright in his chair at the desk. Slowly getting up and touching his shoulder she got a sleepy eyed glare before he seemed to recognize her. “Mate, what are you doing up?” he asked gently stroking her hand, which was still on his shoulder.

“I'm not tired any more.” she stated, watching him stumble slightly to the bathroom. When she heard the water running she decided to dress and try to find something to eat. Slipping into the hall she was greeted by two women coming towards her.

“So you must be Arailm's new bitch? Can't wait to see the out come for this.” the right one hissed lightly as she passed by her. Growling under her breath she simply passed on without a comment.

Arailm finished dressing to find Nolana gone again. Growling because he just had the pleasure of meeting up with one of the pack sluts he headed over to his third in command and told him to send a weeks worth of clothes to Athens before setting out to find his mate. She was sitting out on the front porch watching the pups play.

“Mate? Are you ready to go?” she gave him a quizzical look, “Athen's? We need to be going to my friends little one.” she stood up and followed him to the trees. “Do not worry, you will make a great mother.” he said before shifting.

They ran for thee days and managed to reach the border on the fourth day. “Halt!” someone snarled. Nolana scooted closer to Arailm who in turn growled back at the approaching wolves in warning. “Arailm...why do you intrude on our lands?” Arailm stood on his hind legs to greet the wolf.

“Athen has requested that I be present so I may see his son, you will allow me and my mate to pass.” he ordered. The other wolf seemed offended and rose up on his own hind legs, it was a challenge.

“My lands boy, you do not live here. Leave.” a outraged snarl came from her mate as he swiped the other male, making him fall to his back. Without missing a beat the gray wolf twisted so he wasn't showing his white underbelly and lunged up again. Before Arailm's teeth could embed themselves within flesh a large black and brown wolf slammed the gray one away and growled lowly. “You will allow him passage! As of now your rank as my beta is gone.”

“Yes sir.” the gray muttered while slinking away.

“I do apologize for that old friend, he doesn't like new wolves.” The black-brown offered his paw out which Arailm grasped easily.

“No worries Athen, I would like you to meet my mate. Nolana.” he gestured towards her and gave a sharp toothed grin as she hid behind him, her head nuzzling his back.

“Nolana, such a pretty name. Nalana will love her. Now, you must come see my pup!” they went out at a fast trot, heads down as it started to rain. Once they made it to the porch a man handed them each a towel. “Thanks Jaeke. Come in Arailm, Nolana!” Athen purred at the sight of his mate and pup. She was curled up around the small blue bundle, her eyes narrowed with hostility until she saw Athen.

“Mate, who are they?” she asked, clutching her child closer.

“This is my friend Arailm and his mate Nolana. Do not fear little one, they won't harm you nor our pup.” Once the rain left the area Athen dragged Arailm out of the cabin, leaving Nolana alone with Nalana.

“So I hear you are the shy type?” she asked, eyes staying on her child. “My mate says you reeked of fear when he first met you, do you fear him?” her bright green eyes landed on her.

“N-no, I just...my life hasn't really been the best.” Nolana admitted, looking up to see the other girls eyes were soft.

“I understand, my life wasn't so nice either. But Athen took that away from me, he gave me someone to love, a family, a home and he gave me my freedom. I can never repay him for all that he has done but I can still try. I don't know the relationship between you and Arailm other than it looks strained, you avoided touching him as much as possible while they were talking.” she rose and placed the small bundle, whose name was Robane, into the nearby cradle. “I can see it in your eyes that you fear him little one. You have the right to be if he has done anything to you. But remember that no mater what he does there is a piece of him that will always love you, it is ingrained in him to love his mate no matter how much he tries to repress it.”

“But all he ever does is rape me!” Nolana cried, eye filling with tears. “I don't know what to do anymore! He scares me to no end and my wolf is no help because she is always off with his wolf and I am alone with him.”

“Did you ever consider that he might be lonely without his wolf too?” the small girl looked up at the new mother. “He has had a hard life and his wolf was the only one there for him, without Arelth around he will feel lost and go to the person he thinks he can trust. That person is you little bell. He wants to know that he has someone to love him.”

Arailm sighed as he listened in on the conversation. She feared him and he hated himself for that reason alone. “Don't give up man, Nalana will get her to see a little more of the light but Nolana is right about one thing.” the male said, sitting down on a log beside his friend, “You can't handle her as you would with a play toy. From what you have told me she has had a hard life and she wants a safe haven like you do. Give it to her first and she will give back. I had to give Nalana a safe place for her to rest before she could turn around and give her love to me.” he chuckled, “I remember when we first met, that day we opened the camp for our third year she growled at me for getting to close and for a second I thought she was a werewolf too!” the men shared a chuckle at this.

“I know and I have been trying but every time I turn around it seems she is trying to run form me and I can't find a way to give that safe haven when she sees me as the evil being.”

“That you have to work on yourself. No one but you can fix that problem.” Athen murmured, resting a hand on his friends sagging shoulders. “But I might have an idea on how to start you out...”
