chapter 1: at the lab

After Reece and his friends got out of school they went straight to the lab. "Come on guys we don't want to be late." Leo always wanted to get to the lab before anybody else did. Reece and Keon always thought that it was because he has a crush on their scientist friend Brooke she's really smart she graduated a year before them and she was voted most likely to succeed by Reece's brother and her sister's graduating class and even though they got the same grades as her. but in all seriousness Reece still thinks Leo really likes her. "Guys let's go we're going to be late." He said to them as the big showcase was about two weeks away. When they finally got to the lab they had to enter through the back way for security reasons. Every time the lab had a showcase the three boys had to use the back door as if they can't be trusted.

They really can't be trusted so Brooke makes sure that they use the back entrance just in case the slip up which they sometimes always do but however this day was different very different. "Well what we have here are chambers that I have created to replicate electricity in 3 different ways. As you can see when I pull the lever right next to the tube" Brooke said as she pulled the lever down to a one on each of the pillar like chambers. She had it on the setting one for the test run. "With a pull of the lever as I am showing you." That sounded like something a nervous person would say. To be honest she was so nervous she had never done something like this before.

'Alright' Brooke thought to herself 'let's take this out for a test run' as she turned on the machine at one it started to show her signs that all she worked for all those sleepless nights were worth putting into this experiment. And then it started up and they were working like they should. "They work; they work the is amazing!" she screamed excitedly. Then she had to calm herself down 'okay just because these tubes work doesn't mean that they can just be out there for the world to see' that phrase would haunt her for the rest of the days she kept her secret.

When the boys finally got to the lab they entered through the back door as Brooke instructed they heard her testing something in the lab when it shut down. "Thank you for using the back entrance boys" she said to the boys as the entered the lab. "Your welcome um just curious why did you want us to use the back entrance?" Keon asked Brooke told them it's because she was working on a very important thing for the science showcase in two weeks and she need to make sure that the people who were showing the tubes off didn't get caught in the radioactive crossfire. "So are there going to be replicas because when we came in the light were pretty bright?" she has always had it already figured out the person who was getting the actual tubes were getting the replicas because the local science museum would be putting them on display.

Brooke always had a backup plan for her little experiments. As she explained to the guys the tubes replicas only use a quarter or half of the stuff that was used in the original tubes. When she was done she told them that there was some stuff in the back that needed to be organized while Brooke checked on the replicas for the showcase. As 2/3 of the guys walked into the back Brooke pulled Leo aside and told him that whatever they do make sure that the tubes are turned off before they clean them and that if they are turned on to make sure that they aren't at the label marked XXX. She then told him that it was dangerous and it could lead to death if protective gear is not used inside the tubes. He told her that he had understood and that they would be careful which she naturally doubted for a little bit before she left to go to upper part of the lab.

As the boys were getting the stuff organized in the back Leo came in and told them that Brooke wanted them to clean the tubes. "Did she say anything about leaving them on or were you not even paying attention to what she said?" Keon asked Leo because knowing Leo he never pays attention to what Brooke actually says. "of course I listen to Brooke she said not to leave them on the Label marked XXX because it could be dangerous and could lead to death if left unprotected to the skin I think." he told Keon and Reece very unsure about what he just said. While they were organizing the boys had Keon get some boxes from the closet right next to the tubes. After that Leo and Reece heard Keon trip and ran to check if he was okay. "Yeah I'm fine I think I found some old roller skates that Brooke apparently never used." he told them. "We might need to get rid of these or touch them up and donate them to a little girl who might use them." Leo said. As they finished organizing the closet by the labels Brooke always had set out for us the boys got to work cleaning the tubes Reece was in the one on the right next to the closet full of boxes and empty tubs. Leo was in the one that was near the closet we had just organized and Keon was in the middle one. As they were cleaning the inside Reece heard weird crackling electric noises coming from each tube. "Hey guys what setting are these set to?" he asked the other two boys. "Uh one I believe why?" Keon asked as the tubes began to flash weird colors. The next thing Reece knew was that there was a wall of heat, a strike of lightning, and a flame wall in each of the tubes. After that the boys were all knocked unconscious and they didn't know what happened for the next few hours.

While Brooke was working on the replicas on the upper level of the lab she heard a noise coming from the lower portion of the lab. When she went down there all she saw that the tubes were on and the boys were trapped inside. Brooke then rushed to the control panel and found the switch to turn the tubes off, lucky they shutoff before the boys got seriously injured or hurt. As soon as they shut off she opened the doors. "Hey, hey guys wake up." Brooke said trying to wake them up and trying to see if they were okay. "hey guys, hey guys wake up, wake up are you okay?"

Reece heard Brooke's voice and he finally got the strength to open his eyes as he saw Brooke standing over him trying to wake the boys up. "Are you guys okay?" she asked them as they each got up on their feet. "yeah I think we're fine, but my head really hurts." Leo said and he really got the worst of us from those tubes. "you guys look like you got hurt pretty bad why don't you take the rest of the day off and rest. I'll have the cleaning crew come and clean the rest of the tubes up. I'm surprised those were the only things that were damaged, but you guys look like you got the worst of it." she said to the boys as they gathered their stuff to leave for the rest of the day.

When they got out they looked really burnt, pale they looked really, really, really dizzy one could barely stand up on his own. "Don't worry I'll call someone to come and clean the tubes up. God I'm really glad you guys are somewhat fine just go home and rest and hopefully you'll feel better in the morning okay". Brooke said as the two boys left to go home to get some rest and she spoke with Reece alone at the lab. "Hey you sure you're okay that was a pretty big blast. Hey um my dad's going to take your stuff back to the house so your homework didn't get sprayed on". She told him, he replied with a simply thanks and told her that he was sure he was fine. "Thanks for letting me stay with your dad while my mother's out of town for a while." he said to Brooke. She replied to his comment with a simple no problem, sure they disliked each other's presence from time to time, however we always need one another.

While Reece was recovering in his room his head was starting to spin again it felt like his stomach was turning in circles. "My head still feels like it spinning. But I'm sure I'll be fine I promise." he told his sister. however, that night Reece felt that something inside him was different all three of the boys that night while they were sleeping. Reece's body began to heat up a lot, Leo's body was electric sparking every time he moved in bed when he got home his head was still pounding. The worst of the boys was Keon he had to sleep with the sheets off because he got so hot. It was like it was building inside them and Reece could tell that Brooke knew something was wrong with her step-brother.

During the night Reece kept tossing and turning and still felt dizzy and it was 1:00 a.m. So Brooke called the school and left a message that Reece wouldn't be in tomorrow because she felt something was wrong and he wasn't doing so well. Little by little Brooke began to see changes in his sleep patterns he kept waking up and falling asleep. She took one of her devices to scan Reece's body to make sure he didn't inhale anything toxic. When the test read there wasn't anything in him that could kill him that was a welcome relief. However, it also read that there was something else in him that was causing his body to overheat. So Brooke had to stay with him over night to see if there were any changes in the behavior he was displaying. She got her blanket and pillow from her room and decided to stay with him until morning.
