Chapter 2

The mutated streamed through the door, crashing into old gurneys and medical equipment. I pulled out my pistol and started firing at the monsters. Everyone else seemed to not realize what was going on.

"What the Hell are you guys doing? I can't take them out by myself!" I yelled in desperation.

The rest of them still stared blankly at the mutated creatures. Then Kylie came back to earth and started shooting too. Most of the medical staff didn't have weapons, so they grabbed the closest thing they could find and just started beating them with it.

"How the Hell did they get in here?" Kylie asked.

"Must be a breach in the barrier" one of the nurses replied.

"We have it on constant watch!" Kylie replied confusedly.

"Everyone makes mistakes sometimes" I responded as I shot the last mutated.

"Well, we can't afford to make anymore," Kylie replied.

"I agree," I said. Then I remembered Mika "Oh god, Mika!"

The medical staff jumped to attention and started doing what seemed to be everything they could. Mika must have had 20 needles jabbed into him in the space of five minutes.

"Nothing's working! We have one last option, but if it fails..." the head doctor trailed off.

"Well, then try it! NOW!" I exclaimed.

The doctor took a large needle and jabbed it in to Mika's heart. I sucked in a breath.

Nothing happened.

My heart sunk. I couldn't believe it. Mika had been in my life even before the war. He was like a brother to me. I felt tears spring  my eyes, and I wiped them away quickly.

Then, all of a sudden, the heart monitor machine started beeping again.

"Oh, thank god that worked," I sighed in relief.

"Well... We forgot to tell you one small thing. That needle was filled with an experimental compound derived from radiation... it may have a few side effects."

"Like what?" I asked urgently.

"Well, he might - though there is a very small chance of it - mutate."
