Advice from a Caterpillar

Ahead of Alice she could see what she presumed was an old oak tree, however it was hard to tell because it was painted entirely red with large white spots (even the leaves were painted!). 'How odd,' thought Alice. The curiosity becoming overwhelming, she ventured closer, from skatepark to park bench, duck pond to trimmed hedge, from pavement to grass field, Alice found herself in graffiti's paradise. The tree was a central ornament to a forestry of bright colours and questionable imagery.

A trail of smoke lead Alice to the architect of the mess, a man decked out in various shades of blue, wielding spray paint, with a cigarette hanging from his lips (at least Alice hoped it was a cigarette). Smoke swelled out from the man, he was yet to take notice of Alice, too transfixed by his latest artwork, a four headed, purple hippopotamus that was ballet dancing. Alice found it rather beautiful.

"Wow."

The man lazily turned at the sound of her voice. Half dazed, just barely interested eyes met Alice's. He removed the cigarette from his mouth, releasing a ring of smoke in the process.

"And who might you be?" said the not so impeccably dressed, blue man.

"I'm Alice, and who are you?" A regular old question, something one person says to another when first meeting.

"I am me, but the better question is who, are you?" Turning back to the art work he added a tiara and what was beginning to look like the aftermath of an atom bomb for a background.

"I'm Alice." 'What a silly thing to ask,' thought Alice, 'who else would she be?'

"Ok, let me rephrase the question. Who do you want to be?"

Alice though this question over for a while. 'Who did she want to be?'

"I want to be more than small town Alice, but I don't want to lose her in this wonderful world of the big city. Its all honestly very confusing."

"Then why don't you just be Alice?"

"But like you said, who is Alice?"

"Well she's you, isn't she? So just be whoever you are and want to be." How oddly comforting yet utterly confusing.

"Thank you, I think."
