Chapter 3

The day seemed to go by fast and soon it was lunch time. I, Melissa and Rosy sat at our usual lunch table having a chat which included a lot of hearty laughter.

"Where's Adam and the guys?"
We usually sat at the table together, along with his two other friends Brandon and Kyle. During lunch we always received dirty looks from other girls. We weren't surprised. They were all good-looking, played basketball and football and they were also smart. I sometimes wondered how one person could possess all those qualities.

"Haven't seen them today" ,Rosy replied.
"Oh" was all i could say.
I also hadn't seen Adam all day and i sort of felt guilty. He was my best friend after all.
I pushed that to the back of my mind and continued with our conversation. We were discussing the latest gossip: Jennifer Parker was dating a senior who allegedly was just using her. I honestly felt bad for her but that pity disappeared each time she showed me her snobbish attitude.

Soon enough, i saw the guys walk into the cafeteria but with someone else. It was the new guy, Joel. I hoped he wasn't coming over to our table but lo and behold, he was.
"Hi ladies. Mind if Joel sits with us?" Adam asked as he approached our table.
"Of course not. The more the merrier.", replied Melissa.

"Thanks", Joel muttered in appreciation.
They all took their seats and the conversation continued, on a different topic though. The boys were not interested in school gossip.

I focused mainly on the meal before me because i felt a bit uneasy. I attributed it to the presence of a 'stranger' in our midst.
"You okay Ally?"
I shot my head up in surprise. I was too busy hoping that Joel wouldn't come here that i didn't notice Chloe walk in with them.

"Y-yeah. Of course"
"Okay if you say so."
She put the matter to rest but the look on her face showed that she would ask about it later. To avoid any more attention, i started to join in the conversation until i noticed that Joel had been a bit quiet. I figured maybe he needed some encouragement to open up.

"So....how has your first day at Bridgewood High been?"
This was something Chloe would do but even she seemed engrossed in the conversation with Brandon.
She immediately looked at Joel in anticipation of his answer.

"Well I can't exactly judge yet... but so far it has been nice", he nodded to support his statement.
"I mean i haven't made any friends apart from you guys yet but well, it is my first day after all."

"Hmmm. I see" Chloe said.
"Don't worry. People will start to warm up to you very soon" ,Rosy added.
It was typical of Rosy. She was the kindest and sweetest one among us. No wonder Kyle liked her so much but she was oblivious to it.
Come to think of it, I seemed to be the only one who noticed.

The day went by pretty slowly but the school day was eventually over. The weather was beautiful and so I decided to walk back home with Rosy and Adam who live on the same block as me.

As I walked towards the gates of freedom, I heard my name from behind. I let out a deep groan and turned around with an annoyed expression on my face, my hands on my waist. I was clearly irked by the fact that someone was delaying my liberty.
My expression however immediately softened when i saw the owner of the deep husky voice. I smiled.
"Oh hey Joel. I'm sorry. I didn't know it was you"
"Oh no worries." "You do say sorry a lot, don't you?" He added with a light chuckle.

I laughed along and said, "Apparently, i do apologise more often than i thought "

"So umm...I wanted to say thank you for giving me the chance to be friends with you. I appreciate it a lot"
"Oh s-ure. I like to make friends, i just suck at it." I laughed a bit.
"You're funny but trust me...you don't. Anyway, I've got to go. See you tomorrow"

"Yeah sure." With that, I bade him goodbye and run over to my friends who were waiting for me so we could start our journey.

I got home to meet an empty house so i invited Rosy over for a girl's nice. Though it was a week day, i felt we hadn't done it in a while and i was bored.
We watched movies, did our nails, ordered pizzas and did other fun stuff. At the end of the day, we had so much fun and Rosy ended up falling asleep on the couch and I on the floor.
