Time seemed to crawl by as we anxiously waited for it be dark enough to leave. I made sure Stephen was properly covered to avoid any run ins with people who might recognize him. Daniel was pacing back and fourth while the rest of the crew lazed around without a care in the world. I sat myself by a table by the window daydreaming about what life will be like now? I almost couldn't contain my excitement.
A new life, a new start. But there was still much to learn about this world.
A conversation outside by the window caught my attention. I heard Stephen's name and I knew it was some of his crew mates gossiping among one another.
"...he has a large bounty on his head. Enough to last us years even if we divide it among each other." one member said.
"I know, but how do we get him alone. His first mate barely leaves his side."
"If we can stray Daniel aside, we can take care of him. That will leave the captain and that wench of his without protection." They chuckled. "you reckon she's been touched before?"
"If we leave the captain alive for too long, I reckon she will be...."
The thought of Stephen taking my virginity was tempting, yet scary. I couldn't listen anymore so I quietly slipped away from the window and made my way to Stephen who was at the bar talking to the owner of the tavern.
"...this should cover everything." Stephen said handing a bag of what I suspect to be coins, as the owner nodded and pocketed the bag.
"Can I talk to you in private?" I whispered to him. He looked around and brought me in the most secluded area of the tavern.
"We must be prepared for the travel m'lady. I've covered our cost of our protection here in the tavern and bought enough food to last us a day or so..." he said before I shushed him.
"I don't think your men other than Daniel trust you. I think they might be plotting against you." I whispered.
But he didn't flinch or looked surprise what so ever. "I've suspected that for a while now love."
I frowned. "Then why are they still in your company?"
He kissed my hand. "Have faith in me love. I have a plan."
He made his way to the center of the tavern. "It's time for us to part. The lot of you start making yer way to the stables. Grab whatever horse you find and meet me at the end of town..."
"Why are we going first?" one of the men shouted.
Stephen ignored him. "Daniel will stay with Mistress Alexandrea. I will finish my business and will follow you shortly." Stephen finished.
Daniel looked stunned. "Alone captain? What if you run into..."
"I can handle myself Daniel. You will do as I order." Stephen assured. Daniel didn't look convinced. I think he too was also suspecting some mutiny.
Stephen turned back to his men. "As well as the lot of you! Now go!"
All of them scoffed and made their way out the doors.
"Stephen, you can't go alone!" I exclaimed. Daniel was just as worried too.
"You mustn't captain. You know what they'll do to you." he said.
Stephen smirked as he made sure all his crew were out of sight. He then lifted me in his arms and lead us to the back of the tavern where a carriage awaited us. The owner lifted what looked to be the last of a big sack into the carriage.
"Many thanks." he said as he placed me in the carriage and handed another bag of coins to him. "Is everything done?"
"As you ordered Captain Bonnet." the owner said.
"What about your crew?" I asked curiously, already knowing what what happening. He smiled.
"Revenge comes in many fold love." he said as he climbed in with me. Daniel got into the drivers seat and quickly readied the horse. Stephen and I got comfortable while the carriage started moving. As we passed a couple blocks, we heard a bunch of horses gallop past us. Stephen motioned to me not to make a sound.
"We've caught up to them! Make sure they are surrounded. None shall escape..." a man yelled.
Very discretely, I peeked out of the little slip the carriage tarp offered to me and I saw a bunch of soldiers surrounding what looked like a group of men by a stable.
"You are all under arrest for theft!" one of the officers yelled.
"But Stephen Bonnet is the one you want. He's here to meet us! We're here to hand him over to you and collect our bounty." the scruffy ugly crew man yelled. "It's Bonnet you want!"
One of the officers hit him in the head with the handle of his gun, which cause him to stumble forward into the mud. "You're also under arrest for association with Stephen Bonnet and many of his crimes."
I turned back to Stephen who had a smirk on his face. "They've been plotting against me after I made a stop here in this town."
Although it felt wrong to see them off to jail, possibly to their executions, I couldn't help but smirk back. I mean, they did plan on raping and killing me, after all.
I felt a dark confidence in myself that I've never felt before. I knew my actions were wrong, but it felt amazing to have revenge on the people that have, or were planning to harm me. I've never had this kind of courage before, and in this world, I had more flexibility.
Stephen patted the empty space next to him, suggesting I come lay back beside him, and I obeyed. He wrapped his arms around me as I froze.
"Don't worry mistress. Again, I will not take advantage of ye." he said.
I hesitated before I asked him. "Why?"
He let out a big sigh and just kissed my forehead. "Rest. We have long journey ahead of us."
My body obeyed his every word as I fell straight asleep, feeling safe in his arms.
