There is no way I was about to go out there. Seriously, what was I thinking? I'm going to fail. I already knew it. It was about 5 o'clock and the sun was about to set. I have to take my driver's test in about six minutes. I'm still mentally preparing myself.
Umma didn't want me to drive yet but she signed the form anyway. She warned me about this. She told me I'm still young and I'm not ready. I'll show her! I'll ace this test and she'll take it back.
"Lee Sun-Mi?" I hear the overhead speaker blare my name.
I huff and walk over to the garage.
"Ah, you're Lee Sun-Mi?" The woman waiting by the silver car, blinding my eyes says through her big, red lips.
"Uh- uh, yes" I stutter.
"Don't worry, darling, it'll be over real quick. Just keep your eyes on the road and don't forget what you were supposed to learn," she tells me as we walk over to the car.
I buckle my seatbelt and she hands me the keys. I fumble with them as I try to put them in the ignition. The car lights up and my heart beats faster. Shoot, why didn't I listen to Umma? I have to pass. I need to show her that I can drive.

It all happened so quickly, the driving, the turning, and the stopping. I'm already back at the DMV.
"Ah, Lee Sun-Mi, you did an excellent job for a young one like you." She praises me as I get out of the car. I bow to her.
"Thank you.. I never got your name, I'm sorry," I say.
"Hyong-Kim," she answers with a smile.
"Thank you Hyong-Kim~ssi," I bow again.

I walk home since Umma wouldn't give me a car. I'm 17! Shouldn't I been able to drive a year ago?
Aish.. I'm so clumsy. I fumble with my bag trying to get my keys. I unlock the door and take off my shoes.
"Umma? I'm home," I call out.
"In the kitchen, Sun-Mi," she calls back.
"Umma! I did it! I got my license!" I exclaim, pulling out my new driver's license and shaking it in her face.
"That's good in case of emergency situations. You'll finally be giving me and Appa a break, when we need to run errands." Umma says without looking up from her cutting board.
"Can you hand me the soy sauce? It's in the pantry," she asks me bluntly.
"Umma? Aren't you happy I can finally start driving to school? I don't have to walk anymore," I hand her the soy sauce.
"Do you think I should add one more teaspoon of soy sauce?" She ignores me of course.
She always does this when she's annoyed, which is always. Why can't she understand me? Wasn't she a teenager once too? She never listens to me. I'm getting annoyed.
"I don't know, Umma." I spit back at her and stomp up to my room.
"Aish, you stupid kid! You don't know anything!" She yells at me from the kitchen, but I don't reply.
What is there to say? Oh, I know; can you give me some freedom? Can you let me live? Why don't you love me? When was the last time you've been the least bit affectionate towards me.
I sigh and unlock my phone. I just got it last week before Appa left for America. Umma got really mad that he gave it to me. She never wants me to be happy.
