I was going crazy.

Or I was dreaming.

It was the head injury. Yeah, I must've hit my head harder than I thought because nothing that was happening right now could be real. It just couldn't.

Supernatural beings?

That's the kind of stuff that only existed in fairytales or really good Netflix shows. Stuff that was strictly there for your amusement and not to be considered real in anyway. Humans that shifted into really big wolves, vampires that sparkled? None of it was real.

Right?

"You're lying. This is a prank. Where's the camera?"

I'd finally left the bed and started searching for a camera. I was being recorded. At the end I would be posted on someone's Youtube channel and everyone would get a good laugh. It would be hella embarrassing but that's okay. I would rather be embarrassed than find out there were 'things that weren't human' living on earth.

I reached up and stood on my tippy toes. I was slightly on the shorter side so reaching the corners of the wall was near impossible.

"Rory, stop."

Nova's voice went in one ear and out the other. I was too busy searching for any type of recording device to prove my theory right. I hadn't even noticed when Nova got up and came to stand right behind me.

"Rory."

Her breath fanned my face. It was cool and had a mint flavor that wrapped around me. I turned around and hadn't expected her to be as close as she was. She was a few inches taller than me but if I titled my head and leaned in I could kiss her.

My heart beat didn't just quicken. It straight skipped over a few beats and left me feeling flustered. Being twenty-two, I had great control over my emotions. When I liked someone I could play it cool.

But around Nova, my emotions and feelings were all over the place. She made me feel like a teenager again. A teenager who had a crush on someone she could never have.

"Please, sit back down. I'll explain everything and answer any questions you have."

After a few seconds of deliberation I agreed. She took a step back allowing me to walk past and take a seat on the edge of the bed. Instead of sitting in the chair she sat down on the bed but closer to the top of it.

I looked down at my fingers picking at the nails.

"Thousands of years ago there was a woman. She possessed powers. She was able to control things with her mind and heal stuff. She could bring life, but she could also reap death. People feared her. They were ignorant to what she could do only seeing the worst. So they sent her away. Into the woods to live a lonely life. But in the woods she became friends with the animals. Bears, wolves, deers bunnies and even a bat or two."

I looked over at Nova. She was looking straight ahead as if she were in a movie. Seeing everything she was saying play out before her eyes.

"But soon just having the company of the animals wasn't enough. She longed for someone to talk to who could respond. So she took her favorite wolf and her favorite bat. Together they sat in a circle and she began an incantation. The sky turned dark and thunder rumbled loudly. The wind whipped and the air was filled with a magical aura."

I found myself scooting closer to Nova. I was so engrossed in the story. I still hadn't decided if it was real or not but that didn't matter now.

"The wolf and bat turned into men. The wolf found himself being able to shift in and out of wolf form. The bat now had fangs that came in and out as he pleased. The men loved their new forms. They thanked her and promised to be her protector and life long friend. So the three lived in harmony for years. Growing and multiplying their race. Soon, the woods were filled with vampires and werewolves alike."
