You sighed as you ended your call with Zack. You closed the lid of your laptop and rested your chin on your hand, sighing again. Your eyes drifted over to the window and to the streets of New York, smiling wistfully at the couples that strolled the streets.
Acting had required you to move around a lot. The new TV series you were in made that happen more than anything. And Zack's new job had him moving around too. You hadn't seen him in person for a few months. Your schedules just never matched up. Long distance was difficult, but doable. And it made the times when you and Zack met up in person that much better.
You smiled a little as you mulled over the video chat you two had just had. He had been regaling you with tales of his time in Chile, and then you told him of your latest misadventures in New York.
The sound of a door opening and closing brought you back to the immediate present. You shook your head to clear your thoughts, then slid your laptop in its case and stood up to leave the little café. You adjusted your scarf to better hide your face so you wouldn't be so easily recognized on your day off. You left a generous tip for the baristas before you made your way out to the chilly streets.
As you walked to the subway, a shiver passed through you, and it had nothing to do with the cold. You could feel a pair of eyes watching you, following your every movement. It felt hostile. You gulped and shook your head, but the feeling remained. You clutched the phone in your pocket, ready to pull it out to call someone, anyone, as you sped up.
Desperately, you tried to find a busy street, but you had worked against yourself when you had gone to the most secluded café you could find, and it seemed that the population was thinning out. The burning sensation of someone watching you caused the hairs on the back of your neck to stand up, and you were almost jogging to get to the subway.
You were almost to the entrance to the underground when you felt a tug on your arm, a rag over your mouth, as you were dragged into an ally.
It wasn't long before everything turned to black.

Your throat was dry and your brain was pounding against your skull as you tried to open your eyes. Your tongue felt like cotton and as you tried to open your eyes again, the most recent memories came flooding back to you.
You opened your eyes at the realization that you were not safe, and ropes burned your wrists and ankles. You blinked quickly against the harsh light until your eyes adjusted.
First thing you noted was that it was actually quite dim where you were. Second thing - you were on a rooftop and you were tied up. Third, three people stood in front of you. Two men and a woman, all watching you. The woman grinned, a green glow coming from the eyes of her mask.
You tried to speak, but your tongue felt like cotton in your mouth. The bulkier of the two men hoisted you up, and had his grip on you not been so tight, you would have fallen back to the roof since your legs were tied.
"Make sure Carmen and her ragtag group don't see our little birdie unless we need to play that card." The woman said to the man, who nodded.
"You've got it, mi amigo." He walked across the roof slowly and set you down behind a tall chimney. He tied a knot around the rope connecting your wrists, then tied the length around one of the small smoke stacks protruding from it. Then he took out a piece of cloth and tied it around your mouth, effectively gagging you.
