(Sorry for being so late!)The room was dark, almost too dark to see the outline of Katar, laying deathly still on the stone floor.
Lightning struck, and Black Sheep's world ended. As the thunder crashed, so did Black Sheep's faith in Shadowsan. Lightning struck again, illuminating the red crawling away from Katar's body. Glass was shattered and broken, laying uselessly on the floor. Every atom in Black Sheep's body screamed at her to move towards her fallen friend, but she remained frozen.
Black Sheep thought she could hear someone calling her name, but she couldn't hear anything through the cotton that filled her brain. Someone grabbed her, turning her away from the sight of her fallen friend and the world seemed to rock and sway.
Coach Brunt held on tightly to her, the only thing keeping Black Sheep from collapsing where she stood. Bile rose in her throat, and when the swaying didn't stop, she crumpled to the floor despite Brunt's hold on her.
As her knees hit the floor, her body unfrozen, and let out a scream which was cut off by her sobs. Black Sheep forced reality away, trying to save herself from the fact that her best friend was laying dead and bloody on the floor, not even twenty feet away. The bile that had risen in her throat came out with a ferocity, and she nearly choked as her cries turned into coughs and-
Carmen woke up with a yell, hand stretched out in front of her as she reached for a falling friend that had smiled so sweetly so many years ago. She was covered in sweat and shaking. She felt sick as she forced herself out of bed. She nearly collapsed to the floor as harsh sobs wracked her body. The image of Katar dead on the floor was burned to the backs of Carmen's eyelids.
Her phone went off, and Carmen forced herself to calm down enough to answer.
"Player. What's up?" She asked, voice shaking even as she tried to compose herself.
"The US population." Player snarked, though concern bled through his voice as he asked, "You good, Red?"
"I'll be fine, Player. Don't worry." Carmen replied, sitting back down on her bed.
"Did you have another nightmare?" he asked after a beat of silence.
Carmen sighed, "Yeah."
"I'm sorry, Carmen."
"Like I said, I'll be okay. Now, where are you off talking about population in the States?" Carmen asked, tone taking a teasing lilt.
Player gave a small chuckle that Carmen could only assume was accompanied with a shrug. "That's where you're next hit against VILE is. Specifically in New Hampshire, but you have to make a pit stop at Illinois first."
"Illinois? What's in Illinois?" Carmen asked, looking at her bedroom wall in confusion. "Besides Chicago, I mean."
"Well, see, I made a friend who's also determined to take down VILE. She doesn't have the same... monetary resources we do, but she has more inside information that could really help us out."
"And we're going to get her.... why?"
"She doesn't trust us. She wants to make sure we really are trying to take down VILE before she tells us anything."
Carmen sighed, flopping back onto the bed. "I guess that makes sense. You trust her enough to believe this isn't a double cross? What do you know about her?"
"I.... I honestly don't know a lot about her. Her name is YN. I trust her enough to believe this isn't a double cross, but I'm mostly intrigued by her. I can't find any trace of YN before last year, but everything I've found from then to now, it's safe to say she's done a lot of damage to VILE. She's suspect at best, but I don't think she'll get in your way. So... what's your verdict?"
