It doesn't matter if you're writing about an alien farm in Alabama or the president of a faraway planet. You'll always need to create believable characters and interactions.

The way people act, talk and show affection, can be used to create characters.

In the beginning I recommend making a sketch of the character; his/her likes and disklike, every possible thing there is to know about your character.

What’s their middle name? What’s the color of their hair/eyes? What’s their deepest fear? How do they react in tense situations? What’s their favorite smell/color/memory/movie/book/etc.?
