It was a cold summer day in Winterfell, there wasn't any snow, but the sun refused to shine. The castle was in silence, except for the yard, the Stark children were there. Robb, the oldest of the siblings, had just returned from riding with his half brother Jon and their direwolves, Greywind and Ghost.

Sansa, the oldest daughter of Ned and Catelyn, looked at her siblings while she was sewing, sitting in a bench with septa Mordane and her sister. Arya tried to sew like Sansa, but her attention was more focused on her younger brothers, who were playing on the mud with their direwolves.

The Lord and Lady of Winterfell were looking at their children, how all of them were happy and enjoining the day. The peace was interrupted by maester Luwin.

-I'm sorry my lord, my lady- he said while making little bows -A letter came from King's Landing. From King Robert-

Ned took the letter and read it. He didn't say anything, he simply took a breath, excused himself and went to the Godswood. Catelyn instantly knew something was wrong, she looked at her children one more time, they were all laughing. Apparently Bran and Rickon had been yelled at by Septa Mordane when she saw how dirty they were.

Lord Eddard was sitting beneath the weirwood tree while he cleaned his sword, he seemed troubled. Catelyn came near him and stood looking at the face of the tree.

-So many years and this place still feels distant to me- she said.

-The old golds are not your gods, but they protect you anyway. You are a Stark, a wolf of the North- they both smiled. Catelyn sat next to him.

-May I ask what's wrong, my lord-

-Jon Arryn has passed away. King Robert wants me to replace him as his hand- Catelyn felt scared, King's Landing was a dangerous place. Ned didn't belong there. He belongs in the North, in the cold North.

-You can't-

-I have to- Ned interrupted her -It's an order from my King- he waited a second -An order from my friend-

-Then I'll go with you- even if their marriage had been arranged, Ned and Catelyn had learnt to love each other very much and they loved their children as well.

-No. You must stay here with the boys- lord Eddard hold her hand -I know it's not ideal, but there must always be a Stark in Winterfell. Robb is lord of Winterfell in my absence and he can not do it alone. He needs you- Catelyn thought about it for a second, her husband was right. Robb was his first born, she had to be by his side -Bran and Rickon will stay as well. They are too young, they need their mother-

-You are taking the girls?- Catelyn couldn't imagine beeing without Sansa and Arya. She loved to braid Sansa's hair and help her with her sewing. Arya was much different, but Catelyn loved her as well. She loved all her children.

-Don't ask my to go South alone. I can't take it- there was sadness in Eddard's voice and eyes -Sansa will do great in the south, she is beautiful, just like you. And Arya... Arya has the wolf blood in her. I need her by my side. I need them by my side. Please Cat, understand-

They sat in silence for a long time. Just enjoying each other's company, Catelyn rest her head on Ned's shoulder. They were interrupted by Rickon looking for his mother. It was dinner time.

-I'll be right there, my love. Go to the dinning hall- Catelyn looked at her husband one more time before leaving -I will miss you-

-Me too- he smiled at her -Come on. Time to tell the kids- he took her hand.

-They will hate it- lord Eddard laughed.

-Yes, they will-
