Crested geckos (Correlophus ciliatus) hail from New Caledonia, a group of islands and French territory east of Australia. Specifically, crested geckos are found in the southern province of New Caledonia (Grande Terre and the Isle of Pines). This gecko was discovered in the late 1860s and was believed to be extinct until its rediscovery in 1994.

The climate of New Caledonia is tropical. It has two seasons - a hot and rainy season and a cooler, drier season. Note that the cooler season typically does not drop below the low 60s (degrees Fahrenheit). The average humidity is in the mid-70s-low-80s.

Crested geckos' conservation status is vulnerable, and their population is decreasing. For this reason, it is highly recommended that aspiring crested gecko owners purchase captive-bred geckos rather than wild-caught geckos.

Crested geckos are an arboreal species, meaning they live in trees. These animals like to climb and jump, and will likely jump on you and even off of you. They are also nocturnal, meaning they are active at night and sleep during the day.
