She had kissed him.
Can, puzzled as well as amused watched as Sanem made a mad dash towards a taxi. He could see the embarrassment stain her cheeks as she stole glances at him before entering the cab. He only wished that she didn't regret it because he didn't. A whole year had passed since the last time he felt her soft lips pressed against his, over 300 days since he last tasted her and he was rapturous.
Can caught sight of Yigit walking towards him. The lines on his face creased as if accenting the anger he must have felt inside. But there was something else that caught his eye, Yigit didn't lean his weight on his walking stick instead he carried it like a weapon. Odd, but then it had been more than a year there was no reason why he hadn't completely healed by now.
Yigit stopped inches away from him, using his full height, Can noticed that the man was trying to intimidate him. The act was laughable if not pitiful.
"I told you she'll never love you," Can said, unable to hide his satisfied grin.
"Probably, but we already saw how much she loves you." Yigit returned, a sinister look married a snicker and birthed a smirk that didn't sit right with Can. "She chose her book over you once. I'm her publisher, the man who made her dreams come true and still the one who controls her career."
Can felt the grin slip off his face as the last days of their relationship played back in his head. Sanem wouldn't leave Istanbul with him because of her dreams, her book, her family and friends. She never thought of leaving with Can for Can. He had fought hard to push that out of his mind, her ten-minute mistake that had changed their lives completely.
"She has a second book coming out, do you think you'll be able to survive that?" Yigit leaned his head to the right, his eyes furiously studying Can's face looking for doubt, insecurity and anything else he could use against Can, but Can wasn't going to let him find it.
"Yigit, she doesn't trust you anymore."
"She doesn't trust you either. You burnt her journal remember?"
"We already talked that over, she believes I didn't do it."
"What a coincidence, she believes I didn't do it either," Yigit's chuckle was like being clawed across the chest. "Sanem will always have a soft spot for me. You, Can the man she loves crippled me because you were jealous. While you were gone, we took care of each other and this little show of yours won't change anything." Yigit kicked the bottom of his walking stick and twirled it around. "See you at the farm. I'll be there to beg for Sanem's forgiveness and the kind naive girl she is, she'll forgive me. Besides, we have a second book to publish."
Can had always told Sanem that she was the only thing he was afraid of. Each time something happened he realized just how deep that fear ran. Sanem was his greatest love as well as his weakness. She amplified the insecurities he fostered as an abandoned child. When he met her, he thought that he had finally found his home, but there never ceased to be instances where he had to prove his worth for that home as well as fight for it. He just hoped that this time he wouldn't fight alone.
"Can Bey," the private investigator pulled him out of his haze. "There is something else you need to know about your mother and Yigit."
Can took the envelope the old man handed him. He pulled out medical documents that had Yigit's name on it. He recognized the date on them, how couldn't he? It was the day Sanem's journal was burnt, when he hit Yigit and when Sanem let go of his hand even though she had promised not to.
Was it possible to implode from rage?
The muscles in Can's arm tightened as his fist got tighter, his fingers digging into his palm, his racing pulse tattooing his throat. A year of nightmares for him had been nothing but just a ha-ha for Yigit and Huma. Well, it was time to put an end to this practical joke.
