A deafening silence had fallen over the room when Huma eventually left. Can didn't feel bad about ignoring his mother. She was the reason why he had built a wall around himself since he was a young child. Huma couldn't be trusted, not as a person or a mother. He was appalled when he found out what part she played in his and Sanem's breakup. However, he wasn't surprised. The part that stunned him was that he had allowed his mother back into his life.
Sanem must have convinced him.
He was as anxious as Sanem who kept tearing into her mother's pancakes. Can anted to leave, he didn't feel comfortable here. The Aydin family were more determined than he was to get his memories back. They had gone to insane and extraordinary lengths for it, he appreciated their help but at times it irritated him a bit. These days he found himself more at ease with people who didn't know him at all.
"I should go," Can rose from the table amid their protests. "I have a lot of work to do before I hand in my work tomorrow morning."
"Let me pack you some food," Mevkibe said as she dashed into the kitchen before he could decline her offer.
"Don't work too hard. You need to think about your health," Nihat said.
"Thank you."
"Where are you going to stay?" Sanem asked. "Mirhiban Abla left to look for your father. There is no one at the farm."
"The hut. I'll be staying there. It's just me and I don't need that much room. Besides now that I am working again, I'll be spending most of my time away or at the agency, I don't need much." Can studied Sanem's face for her reactions. He was looking for sadness or something to tell him that she was sad that he would be taking trips out of Istanbul.
"Albatross," she muttered and looked down. "Goodnight."
Nothing.
"I'll walk you out," Emre offered.
Once they got to his car, Can was still staring at the front door waiting for Sanem to chase after him or something. But she didn't.
"What I'm I supposed to do now?" Can asked Emre.
"I don't know," Emre answered honestly. "This is the most confusing situation I've ever witnessed. Just give her time. Sanem will figure out what's more important."
"Really?" he scoffed in disbelief. "Sometimes I think she would have preferred if I died with my memories instead of waking up without them."
"How could you say that? She loves you."
"Probably, but she loves her memories with her Can more."
"Sanem and the Can you are speaking about went through a lot for their love. You can't blame her for mourning for the past that she's lost. That love story the two of you shared, only has meaning if both of you remember it. You are-were the only other person in this world who lived that love with her. Give her a chance. When she's ready, she'll come to you."
"I might not be here when she finally does," Can said as he got into his car.
"You need to stop being afraid, Abim."
"Nothing in this world scares me the way Sanem does. It's like she holds my world in the palm of her hand and at any moment she could crush it."
"Sanem is not mom, Can." Emre reassured him. "I can promise you no one in this world loves you more than she does, not even you. Trust her a little."
"Trust is earned. But I'll think about it."
She was technically not eavesdropping. Sanem was on her way back to her room when she overheard Can and Emre's conversation. Her heart broke a little, Can didn't trust her plus he was hurting.
Can had told her before how she was the one thing in this world that scared him. Sanem hadn't taken him seriously. But listening to him talk about how he thought she would have preferred he died instead of waking up a stranger, broke her. It was time she ended her mourning for the past and start living for the present. She wasn't interested in the future, just the here and now.
Sanem run up the stairs to her room, changed into some warmer clothes and packed a few days worth of clothes in her bag. That was her hut too and she decided she was going to stay there as well.
"Should I call you a cab?" Emre caught her trying to sneak out of the house.
"It's okay, I can find one outside. Emre please cover for me."
"Don't worry, we are breaking the news to your parents about moving out. They will be completely occupied with us to notice that you disappeared." He said with a dreaded laugh. "Sanem?"
"Yes."
"Are you sure? Don't go to him unless you are completely sure about your decision."
"I can't live without him. I love him. Plus we can make new memories."
"Be safe."
"Thank you."
"Sanem!" her mother called out. "Where are you."
Sanem ducked out the door as Emre distracted his mother in law. Sanem felt bad for Emre but she was grateful for his sacrifice.
Can was busy in his darkroom when someone knocked on his door. Immediately he knew who it was. There was no reason for Emre to seek him out tonight after their talk. It could only be Sanem.
Can opened the door and she was standing there with her bag in her hands. "Hi."
"Hi."
"What are you doing here?"
"You're here."
"Okay," Can stepped out closing the gap between them. "I know that. This is my hut."
"Our hut." Sanem weaved her fingers into his. Can stared at their hands and smiled at how warm her tiny hand felt in his. "Our hut, our love, our memories, our dreams, our present, and our future."
"Ours?" Can cupped her cheek in his palm and caught a tear with his thumb. She was so beautiful, especially when she was vulnerable. All he wanted to do was protect her, even from himself.
"Yes ours. Why? You don't want to share a life with me?"
Can laughed at how she stuck her chin our, her brow furrowed as if she was ready for a fight she thought she would win.
"What about my memory?"
"We can make new memories. Every moment we spend together will be a memory we can keep in our hearts. And if you forget again we can make new one."
"If I forget?"
"Yes, I have a photographic memory, I don't forget," she teased.
"I'm in love with you. Aren't I the luckiest man. Falling in love with the same woman in one lifetime."
"The luckiest, don't ever forget it."
With the tip of his finger Can lifted Sanem's chin. His thumb caressed her soft lips before his own lips replaced it. A step into heaven, that was the only way he could describe it.
"I love you," she said against his lips.
