"I was his, and he was mine. He was the whole world. In the sound of waves, in the shadow of the streets. I saw him, in the glow of the stars, in the beauty of flowers, only him."
Sanem stared at Can's face as he slept. The past two days had proved those words true. He was hers, every version of him and hopefully in every lifetime. She lay back in his arms when a bout of nausea rushed over her.
What was happening to her?
Sanem shot to her feet and ran towards the outhouse but only made it to the bushes next to Can's prized vegetable garden. At least she contributed to the manure the soil needed to grow those beautiful crops.
It hadn't been anything she had drank or eaten, or else Can would have been sick as well. Judging by how comfortably he was resting, he was definitely not having an upset stomach. But then again, Can could probably take a bite out steel and digest it comfortably.
Sanem rinsed her mouth with water but even the taste of it made her gag again. She staggered back to where Can lay, reached for his t-shirt and slipped it over her naked body.
What did you expect?
"What are you talking about?"
You really aren't that smart.
"If you aren't ready to make sense shut up."
What's the date today?
"Why?"
When was the last time-
"Shush! No, it's not," Sanem turned her head to look at Can, then to her belly, then to Can and then to her belly. She did it over and over again managing to muddy her brain and making herself dizzy. She ran into the cabin, grabbed her purse and dug her phone out of it. A quick check on her period tracker and the truth slapped her across the face knocking her off her feet.
A gigantic two followed by months and the word late stared at her.
"Annem! Annem is going to kill me."
What about Can? He just started working and traveling again. How happy is he going to be when he realizes he has to stop just when he started.
"Shush!"
"Sanem," Can called out. "Please come here and tell your head voice to go away."
"You heard him," she tossed into the air.
Sanem took a deep breath, got back on her feet and walked back to where Can lay. He still had his eyes closed. She watched him for a second and when his eyes begun to flatter open she quickly jumped into the makeshift pillow beside him.
"Are you uncomfortable?" he muttered. His breath warm against her temple.
"No, I'm fine. I just needed to check if my mother called. I don't want her turning up here."
Can chuckled, "That would be fun. She'd kick my ass."
"She's going to kill me. I mean she would kill me if she found me here sleeping naked, outside."
"Do you want to go inside?"
"No."
"Are you okay?"
"Uh-huh! Let's go back to sleep."
Can woke up just as the sun was rising. Sanem was snuggled in his side a vision of beauty. He gathered her in his arms and took her inside. Can didn't want to wake her up, instead he decided to use the time to finish editing the Amazon pictures so that he could turn them in on time. Sanem slept the day away, once in awhile demanding a drink of water while she was half asleep.
Can tried to wake her up for breakfast and lunch but nothing. With the free time, he decided to take on another project. He would decorate the hut just as he did before- just as it had been described in Sanem's book. It would be a beautiful surprise for her.
Sanem woke up where she fell asleep, in Can's arms. But this time when she opened her eyes it wasn't just the stars and the moon lighting up the sky. Can had hang fairy lights and dream catchers. It was exactly like he had done it when he proposed the first time.
"Thank God, I was beginning to think you were in a coma," Can set her book aside and gathered her in his arms, hugging her tight.
"It's beautiful," Awed by the similarities and the little differences as well.
"It was easy, especially since you described it so perfectly. Sanem," his brown eyes narrowed as he regarded her. Sanem wondered if their baby would have the same eyes as he did. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. Just a little tired." She didn't lie, she did feel fine after that long sleep but she still was a little tired. "It's been an eventful few weeks. I guess the sleep is catching up to me."
Can brewed some tea as he waited for Sanem to return. There was this gnawing feeling that Sanem was keeping something from him. He wondered what it could be. They had spent the past two days together in each other's arms. No one had called to interrupt the intimacy and there were no unwanted visitors.
"That smells good," Sanem said as she walked back.
"I thought you would like some food since you slept through breakfast and lunch." Can stroke her cheek, trying to camouflage him checking her temperature. "Is this normal for you? Sleeping for almost twenty hours?"
"No actually...Can-"
"Sanem!"
"Ah!" Sanem's scream pierced into the night air. "Abla, Emre? What are you doing here?"
"They brought us food. I didn't expect to be here this long and I was too worried to leave you. So I asked them to drop by."
"Okay," Sanem said with a sigh.
