Thunder crashed loudly

Lightning zig-zagged from the sky

The air was fridgid

Liberty (13)

'Good morning class.'

'Good morning Mrs Green,' the class and I replied.

'Today we will be doing something you have all been waiting for. You will be able to reveal your red strings and find out who your partner is!'

I shook with excitement. I had been waiting my entire life for this moment! I really badly wanted to tell the teacher to hurry up, but I kept calm.

'To reveal your string, clasp your hands together tightly for 5 seconds and your string will appear. It is an apparition, so it can go through your hands, walls and other things. Your soulmate will be in the same age group as you, feel free to find them! Ok, you can begin revealing your string.'

Finally! I clasped my hands together as tightly as possible. I felt them going red. I tried not to rush 5 seconds, so I counted a little longer. I opened my hands and gasped. I rushed up to the teacher.

'Miss... Why is my string black?'

The teacher stared at my hands like se couldn't believe what she was seeing. I began to worry. Was there something wrong with me? Did I not have a soulmate? Did my soulmate die?!

'Sweetie... You didn't cut your string did you?!'

'N-no! This is my first time seeing it!'

The class started to crowd around me. My vision blurred, more and more, until I couldn't see anything. Voices were resonating inside my head. I could feel them pounding on my skull. It hurt. It hurt really bad.

Then everything went black.

'That was all I remember,' I explained to my mum for the 100th time. She didn't look convinced. 'Are you sure you didn't cut it?' It had been 2 years and she still didn't trust me.

'Positive.' I responded, hoping that she might just believe me. Of course she didn't.

'There's no other way that you were born with a black string. It just...'

'Just what mum!'

'Just doesn't work like that...'

I sat up, irritated. 'Well there must be some sort of explanation! If it doesn't work like that! '

'You know what, I don't know what to do anymore! You can go check in the libraries for any information, but I have nothing! Zip zero!'

'I will. Right now.' I got up and left the house, slamming the door behind me. What I didn't realise was that my city was experiencing a thunderstorm. Being my stubborn self, I continued to walk through the strong winds.

I started questioning why I left the house in the first place. I didn't acknowledge the weather, I was just really angry. Nobody believed me, no matter how hard I tried to convince them.

The air was bitingly cold and I started to shiver. The library was only a few blocks away from here, I was really close. I tried running to maybe warm up, but that didn't work.

'A bolt of lightning zig zagged its way down and thunder crashed, like big cymbals in the sky. I looked up at the grey sky and the sun was nowhere to be seen. I tried to keep warm inside of my hoodie to no avail.

I spotted the library ahead of me, through the harsh winds and pouring rain. I stepped inside and sighed with relief.

I guess I learnt that being stubborn is not a virtue.
