안년,에밀리 here with the official first lesson of Emily's Hangul School 101.

At first, you might think the alphabet and pronunciation system is a piece of cake to memorize, but think again. Before getting into the lesson, don't say I didn't warn you about your brain getting tangled as this work continues on.

Here goes......

Consonants

한글 has 11 basic consonants, including the so-called fake consonant ㅇ. The pronunciation for each consonant sounds similar when you pronounce it in English.

Note: Unlike English, the letter F and Z don't exist in this system, so F is pronounced as P and Z are pronounced as J.

The letters that are underlined and in bold are how you should pronounce it in Korean as you would in English.

ㄱ as in gun
ㄴ as in need
ㄷ as in door
*ㄹ r/l
ㅁ as in moon
ㅂ as in bear
ㅅ as in sad
ㅈ as in joy
ㅍ as in park
ㅎ as in hear

*You might notice many Korean lessons might teach you to pronounce ㄹ as in run. Unfortunately, they are wrong to pronounce ㄹ neither way.

How to correctly pronounce

1. Your tongue should touch the ceiling of your mouth, instead of the back of your front teeth.
2. Move your tongue downwards as you pronounce ㄹ like in the word love.
3. Congratulations! You did it!

The Fake Consonant ㅇ

Unlike English and other languages, Hangul has a consonant that doesn't make any sound at all. English words mostly start with a vowel, like apple. This system, however, is designed to support a consonant, so you must add a fake consonant ㅇbefore a vowel.

Let's say you want to write BAAAA in Korean. It should be written like this: 바아아아, not 바ㅏㅏㅏ.

Consonants that consists of more than one stroke

When a consonant is written with more than one stroke based on basic consonants, the pronunciation comes out stronger.

ㅋ as in cake
ㅌ as in talk
ㅍ as in pass
ㅊ as in change

Basic Vowels

Vowels in this alphabetic system are quite confusing since the writing looks so similar to each other. I will try my best to make it as easy as I can for my dear lovelies to understand, so please bear with me.

ㅣas in tree
ㅏas in father
ㅑas in see ya
ㅓas in up
ㅕas in yup
ㅡ as in station *no vowel*
ㅗ as in open
ㅛ as in yogurt
ㅜ as in root
ㅠ as in youth
