안녕,에밀리 here with my third lesson for this work. This lesson, I must warn you, is quite confusing with all the rules. As I have said in the first lesson, Hangul looks easy to memorize, but complicated to understand.

ℍ𝕠𝕨 𝕥𝕠 ℝ𝕖𝕒𝕕 𝔹𝕒𝕤𝕚𝕔 ℂ𝕠𝕟𝕤𝕠𝕟𝕒𝕟𝕥𝕤

In my previous lessons, I have noted that Hangul has a so-called fake consonant ㅇ that doesn't make any sound. However, I will explain it in detail once again.

𝔸𝕟𝕪 ℍ𝕒𝕟𝕘𝕦𝕝 𝕔𝕠𝕟𝕤𝕠𝕟𝕒𝕟𝕥 𝕠𝕣 𝕧𝕠𝕨𝕖𝕝 𝕔𝕒𝕟'𝕥 𝕓𝕖 𝕨𝕣𝕚𝕥𝕥𝕖𝕟 𝕠𝕣 𝕡𝕣𝕠𝕟𝕠𝕦𝕟𝕔𝕖𝕕 𝕒𝕝𝕠𝕟𝕖. 𝕐𝕠𝕦 𝕞𝕦𝕤𝕥 𝕡𝕦𝕥 𝕓𝕠𝕥𝕙 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕔𝕠𝕟𝕤𝕠𝕟𝕒𝕟𝕥 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝕧𝕠𝕨𝕖𝕝 𝕚𝕟𝕥𝕠 𝕒 𝕤𝕪𝕝𝕝𝕒𝕓𝕝𝕖 𝕓𝕝𝕠𝕔𝕜.

받침: Introduction

When a Hangul syllable ends with a consonant, it gets another consonants below the others. This consonant is called 받침.

How to read 받침

1. Read the block as you would read the basic reading order.
2. Then read the letter at the bottom.
*A block means one syllable.*
Note: The Hangul syllable 산 can't be written like this: 사ㄴ.

What exactly is 받침?

받침 is a consonant placed at the bottom and pronounced at the end of the syllable block it belongs to. Let me make it easy for you to understand: 받침 can be translated as the main support because it supports other letters.

받침 with Basic Vowels

Unlike 받침 with consonants, this reading order with basic vowels is easier.

Note: The word 손 can't be written as 소ㄴ.

1. Reading always starts from top to bottom.
2. 받침 is always pronounced at the end.

When 받침 changes its Pronunciation

Some consonants are to be pronounced differently as a 받침. When a syllable block ends with a consonant and the next block also starts with a consonant, its pronunciation changes. The funny thing is even Koreans pronounce some of them wrong themselves.

ㄱ/ㅋ➡️ k
국수 guksu (noodle)
ㄷ,ㅅ,ㅈ,ㅊ,ㅌㅎ➡️ d/t
쫒다 jjotda (chase)
ㅇ➡️ ng
사랑 sarang (love)

Twin Consonants

Now let's make a doppelganger for some Hangul consonants. Only ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ, and ㅉ can be doubled.
Pronouncing double consonants can get very confusing. If you are familiar with Spanish or Italian accents, Korean twin consonants sounds similar esp. ㄲ, ㄸ, and ㅃ.

ㄲ➡️ kk
ㄸ➡️ tt
ㅃ➡️ pp
ㅆ➡️ ss
ㅉ➡️ jj

Vowel Combinations

Just like double consonants, vowels combined with another vowels can get a bit tricky.

and ㅐ both sounds like e as in edit.
ㅖ and ㅒ both sounds like ye as in yes.
ㅖcan also be sound like e with a consonant.

How to Read W-Vowels

1. Start with the consonant
2. Pronounce the letters from top to bottom, then right.
3. Remember 받침 is always pronounced at the end.

Pronounce fast: W-Vowels Combinations

의➡️ ui
워➡️ wo as in water
와➡️ wa as in watch
위➡️ wi as in wish

The four vowels you see above are a combination of two vowels you have also learned so far in this lesson.

Note: Use two different vowels in a syllable block and try to pronounce it fast.
For example:
오아 (o-a)
우어 (u-eo)
우이 (u-i)

Combination + Combination

Do you know you can also combine e-vowels and w-vowels? The funny thing is even native Koreans cant distinguish them or even pronounce them.

*외, 왜 , and 웨 are pronounced the same.*

of Chapter One

The next post will be a quick summary of what I have taught you in the previous lessons.

The next chapter will be "Introduction to Korean Grammar 101: Sentence Structure."
