Chapter 5: The show

Months flew by, and, soon, the day of the show came. Shancai had practiced her role correctly, she was able to transmit her character's feelings to others, but she felt excessively nervous.

She got a sneak peek behind the curtains and had knots in her stomach because of anxiety when she realized how many people were sitting in the room. Even the view of her parents sitting down on the front row next Daoming Zhuang didn't calm her.

Standing by her side, Daoming si glanced worriedly at her. He came closer and put a hand on her shoulder, making her startle slightly. "Are you alright?" He asked.

She slightly blushed, smiling tightly, then nodded. "Yes, yes! Everything is alright!"

Daoming Si raised an eyebrow skeptically. Then, without a word, he pulled her against him, hugging her tenderly. First, Shancai was embarrassed because she didn't want someone to spot them, and she slightly stiffened. However, the young man's spice and Cologne smell wrapped her, and she let herself go in his arms.

She always had been confused by Daoming Si's talent to irritate her as much he calmed her. She hated him as much she loved him passionately. She ran away from him, but, at the same time, she was still attracted by him.

In a few weeks only, the young man became an integral part of her universe. So much so if even he disappeared, she wondered if she could breathe again. That sensation, these feelings disturbed her and turned her upside down.

She felt Daoming Si's lips brushed the top of her head while he stroked her hair gently. She closed her eyes, happy, enjoying these few minutes of joy.

Then, Xiaoyou's voice echoed not far away, and they immediately parted, breaking the cast. Daoming Si smiled at her so warmly he could have melted the iceberg threatening the Titanic so, Shancai felt a lot less anguished.

Lights faded, and everybody took place on the stage. The public went silent, and the young people turned into Mulan, Mushu, Shang, and all the characters of the story.

Mulan came, her hair tangled, her clothes stained, her skirt rolled up while she rode her horse like a man, and her mother and her grandmother were desperate because they had to bring her to the matchmaker.

Meizuo and Lei were playing the horse, and they almost tripped, and Shancai almost fell from their back. However, they caught up narrowly while the young woman bit her lips to prevent herself from laughing.

The woman who had to help her to get ready for the matchmaker's meeting – she was played by Lizhen – scrutinized her, pouted, and said, "This is what you give me to work with? Well, honey, I've seen worse! We're going to turn this sow's ear into a silk purse!"

Mulan had to take a cold bath then a hot tub – Shancai was still wearing an undershirt and shorts, of course – then people rubbed her, curled her hair vehemently to disentangle them as much as possible, they applied makeup on her then dressed her up.

Eventually, her grandmother offered her a jade necklace and a lucky cricket. The people in the room burst into laughter when Lei appeared with his outfit while the young man remained stoic as usual.
