Prologue:
Circa 1981

"He'll grow out of it!" Mrs. Andersen argued back, "He's only four, afterall."
"Exactly! And he's been having these.. these night terrors since he was a two! And who knows he could have had them before."
The two adults continued to bicker, unaware of the unsettled boy in the carseat behind Mrs. Andersen.
"I hate this bridge.." Mrs. Andersen mumbled under her breath, crossing her arms. "We shouldn't have left their house in this condition. It's getting worse."
Jack's blue eyes shot open, and a scream erupted from his throat.
Mrs Andersen jumped, adjusting the mirror to see his son.
"Baby, what's wrong?" She cooed, reaching forward and patting the boy's knee.
"J, we talked about this. You need to stop screaming, it's not gonna help." Mr. Andersen scolded the young boy, letting out a disappointed sigh after he finished speaking.
"It was really, really, really, scary, mommy." The young boy began to cry, causing Mrs. Andersen to turn around with a sigh. "I was running as fast as I could b-b-but.."
"What happened, baby?" Mrs. Andersen asked, her eyes softening at the sight of her trembling son.
"It got me, mommy."
Mr. Andersen, briefly glanced at his wife.
I've driven this bridge thousands of times. This isn't any different.
Mr. Andersen turned around to face his son. "We're gonna take you to see a therapist. It'll all be okay soon. We'll help you, I promise."
The young boy raised his small hand and wiped the hot tears from his face. "Ok-Okay, daddy."
The man smiled kindly at his son before turning around to face the road again.
His wife let out a yelp as a baby deer jumped out infront of them, causing Mr. Andersen to swerve to avoid hitting the small creature.
Mrs. Andersen screamed as the car swerved onto ice, causing it to crash through the wooden bridge.
"Shit!" Mr. Andersen said after the car crashed into the frozen river below.
The airbag went off, knocking the man back and embedding the seatbelt into the seat.
"Honey, you need to get Jack out of here." Mr. Andersen explained calmly, pulling at his stuck seatbelt. "The car cracked the ice. We don't have long."
"Wh-What? No. What about you?" Mrs. Andersen's eyes widened as she frantically pulled on his seatbelt. Her actions became more and more panicked with each passing second.
A crack in the window began to expand, causing freezing water to pour into the car.
"I said get Jack and get out. I'll be fine. Do it!" He shouted, scaring the boy behind him. "Now!"
Mrs. Andersen began to panic, tears welling in her eyes. Her feet became submerged in the icy water.
"Do it! Get out of the car now!" He shouted, the water increasing. "I love you."
Mrs. Andersen nodded, promising she'd come back for him. She unstrapped her seatbelt, and climbed into the back. She unbuckled a terrified Jack and pulled him out. "I love you, too."
The back of the car was still unsubmerged in the water, making it easy for Mrs. Andersen to open it.
She pulled her son out, holding him close to her body as she jumped. She let out a groan as her body collided with the ice.
"Stay here, baby." She whispered, standing to get her husband.
When she turned around to face the car her heart dropped.
"No, no, no, no, no!" She cried, falling to her knees as the bumper of the car fell below the freezing river. "No, please, God, no! Why? Why? Why?"
"Mom-mommy? I'm cold.." Jack whispered, tugging on his mother's jacket. "Where's daddy? Is he okay?"
The woman didn't respond, too heartbroken to move. She sat in silence, watching where the car sunk.
Guilt crept into the child's heart, somehow knowing his father wasn't coming out of that river alive.
He began to cry, knowing if he hadn't screamed that everything would be okay.
When he saw his mom starting to cry, he began to cry harder. He didn't like to see his mom sad. Especially now that he was the cause of it.
Jack crawled over to his mom, wrapping his tiny arms around her.
"I'm sorry, mommy."
