Chapter three: Fogging Smoke

Desperate, you throw yourself against the door. And indeed it gives in a little. Yet it still remains worlds away from swinging up. Again and again you throw yourself against it, but your strength is simply not enough to cause serious damage to the door. More and more smoke comes up to you from below and you have to cough again. Tears rise in you. One last time you throw yourself against the door. Then you let yourself sink to the ground discouraged.
You bump into the book that you probably dropped in the excitement. Sadly you stroke it. Now you will both die. Should you read it one last time?
You open the book, but you can hardly recognize a letter. It's just too dark here! Too much smoke, no windows and...Suddenly you see something red shimmering between the grey swaths. Filled with new hope you jump up and get hold of the fire extinguisher hanging next to you on the wall. What an irony of fate, you almost screamed with disappointment. You won't be able to extinguish the fire with a single fire extinguisher. You probably wouldn't even be able to bring it down the stairs as heavy as it is. Tired you let yourself sink back to the ground, where the air is at least a little better. Slowly close your eyes, lean back and bump your head against the door. Which is much more painful for your head than for the heavy door, because you simply don't have enough weight to do anything against it.
Weight! All of a sudden you come up with an idea and pull the fire extinguisher out of its anchorage. You can hold it barely. Carefully you step back as far as possible on this landing. Then you take all your strength together and let yourself fall with the fire extinguisher and full force against the door. And indeed, the metallic thing creaks and groans, which further inspires your hope.
So you strike a second hit against the door, throw yourself against it with the fire extinguisher. And she gives way crashing! Wads of smoke go out and you can breathe a sigh of relief. The light of the summer sun blinds you. So it takes you a few minutes until you can look around on the roof terrace where you are now standing. It is incredibly large and covers the entire shopping centre, making it look like a large gravel path. Normally the view from up here should be fantastic. Today, however, the smoke is winding up the edges, making it impossible to see what's behind it.
From below you can hear siren howls. The help has arrived. "Help," you scream with all your might. But with all the noise down there, nobody can hear you. The smoke prevents you from being seen. And there's only one side where it doesn't rise. This one, where instead of a wall, an abyss gapes into the depths. Slowly and very carefully you walk towards this edge in the hope that you could be seen from there. You must not even think about how far it goes down there. But you must look down. Carefully you go further towards it. There you suddenly hear it crack under your feet. Shocked, you jump back. Not a second too early, because only a heartbeat later the concrete piece on which you just stood falls into the depth.
Fearfully you look around for further possibilities. But you are locked up on this roof like in a cage! At least you can breathe here and...so you hope...be found by the fire brigade. So you can't think of anything else to do but fetch your dragon book. You sit down with it at the outer door frame, at which you can lean and begin to read.
