I stared at my brother in shock as he stood there. Under the scrunity of all of my friends, his face was hard and impassive. You'd almost expect him to go 'Sup' in a minute. His hands were in his pockets. I examined him carefully, slowly getting up from my seat next to Aaron.
Not one hair on his head was out of place, he looked spotless. He wasn't actually dressed casually, instead, he wore charcoal dress pants and shiny Italian leather shoes. Of course, always the best for Ares. His dark silk blue tie was tight around his neck, as if he was just out of a meeting. This was normal Ares. Always tensed and serious Ares. The one I'd been running away from before he'd found me in Barcelona.
His stare was hard. He knew of course, that there was no way I'd run to him and hug him. He'd given me a taste of my own medicine and God only knew, if Ares could hold a grudge, there were no existing words for what I could do. He looked at me up and down, of course he was disapproving of this. Even if he was missing some elements of the story, there was no doubt that he'd probably guessed the main ordeal.
I walked towards him, it was like everyone was holding their breath around us. No words were being spoken, but I was the one who broke the silence.
"Leave."
Harmony gasped. I felt the blood rushing to my head, the anger and betrayal being far worse than the joy of finally seeing the brother I'd been so desperately missing. But he didn't need to know I'd been missing him. I wanted him to leave.
"Athena, come on." Ares' tone was patronizing and I had to refrain myself from grabbing his neck and choke him.
"I actually don't know this man," I said to Carlyle, "I think you should call the security."
"I can't, Thena-"
"Why?" I gritted out between my teeth.
"He paid to be here tonight. A lot of money. We can't throw him out."
I felt my chest rise with the depth of my breaths. I tried to wrap my head around this. Ares had no shame, coming back and requesting to see me after abandoning me. Yes, it was hypocritical, I'd left him in the exact same manner in the family house in Manhattan, but at least I'd never pretended to care and made a huge deal about 'sticking together' before leaving.
What you saw was what you got. I'd spent months warning him that any day I could snap, but he'd still acted like I had been kidnapped by a serial killer. I'd even left him a note. Sure, asking him not to worry wouldn't stop him from being worried, but it showed that I gave half a fuck.
"Guys, we're starting right now." A woman with red hair and a headset came for Aaron and Carlyle- I think her name was Jen, she was nice. She smiled at me before nodding at the guys. Aaron shot me a questioning look, his eyes going from Ares, to me.
I looked away and let him pass me by. Car was the one who actually stopped and said something.
"Babe, are you sure you want to stay tonight? I could call a car for you. You could leave right now. Rocky could go with you." His brown eyes were concerned and I saw he was doing a lot of efforts to seem reassuring.
