It's Friday, and Kirby's family arrived in-town early this afternoon. His family was coming over tonight and my parents were making dinner for the occasion.
Emma was at a playdate-sleepover tonight, and Jacob and Caden were hanging out with some of the guys, so the house has been silent today. We didn't have school since it was a holiday.
I wasn't too nervous about meeting them. Kirby had assured me about fifty times in the past two days that his parents were looking forward to meeting me. Still, my nerves had been going crazy. This would be the first time that I've ever 'met' a guy's parents and I wanted to make a good impression.
They end up arriving at 5 o'clock, and my heart was racing as soon as I saw them getting out of their parked car in the driveway. The doorbell rings and my mind is racing.
What if they don't think I'm good enough for him?
What if they don't like me?
I brush those thoughts aside and try to remain positive. We're only fifteen, we don't have to have everything figured out.
At least I hope not.
I get up off the couch and straighten my blouse as my mother answers the door. Our parents introduce themselves to one another, and then his mother turns to me.
"You must be Cailey" She says. "I'm Kirby's mom, but you can call me Jen, or Mrs. Dach" She gives me a hug and then pulls away to look at me.
"It's so nice to meet you Mrs. Dach" I smile.
I meet his dad, and then both of his siblings, Katie and Corbin.
Kirby was right about his sister, I can tell that we instantly click.
We decide to go into the living room and sit down while dinner was being prepared. Our dads end up talking about NHL, and I go in the kitchen with his mom to escape the craziness.
"So is this your first time in Saskatoon?" I ask, as we both sit down at the kitchen table.
Jen nods. "Yes. Well, except for the day that we dropped Kirby off" She says. "It's a shame we aren't staying longer, but Katie and Corbin can't miss school and practices"
"They both play hockey, right?"
She nods. "Yes. My husband played in the NHL, all three of my children play..it's kind of like it's impossible to get away from" She laughs.
"I know what that's like. Three of my sisters are in boarding school on hockey scholarships, and my brother plays juniors"
"Do you play as well?"
I quickly shake my head. "No, I played when I was younger..I'm not really the athletic type" I trail off.
"You and me both" She agrees. "Kirby told us that you both go to the same school, Saskatoon West? Do you enjoy it?"
I shrug. "It's okay. I transferred to Saskatoon West in January from my old school - so I guess I haven't gotten a feel for it..you know?"
"I completely understand. Changing schools can be so hard" She says sympathetically. "That was actually Kirby's biggest worry about coming here"
We look over, and he's in the living room conversing with my parents. I smile, and look back at his mom.
"Does Kirby talk about me a lot?" I ask, changing the topic.
"Oh, yes" She says. "He's never been much of a talker. He's much on the shy side...but he talks a lot about you"
"It's good things right?" I laugh.
She assures me that Kirby says good things about me, and my heart feels happy.
All during dinner, his parents had a lot of different questions to ask my parents, so they could get to know one another. I could tell they're getting along well.
After dinner, Katie, Jen, and I help my mother clean up while the boys remain in the living room. As we begin to pack up a little bit of leftovers, Jen and Katie both begin to tell me a few stories about Kirby and the rest of their family. I can feel myself getting along with them already.
One of the stories they told me was about the time that Kirby had to get his wisdom teeth a few months ago. Or that time Kirby and his friends back home, all had to get stitches at the ER after climbing threes. Another one was a story of when he cried his first away game. All of the stories were about Kirby mostly and were a little embarrassing, but that just made him seem even cuter to me.
His family leaves to go back to their hotel at about 8:30, and I beg my parents to let Kirby stay over a little while longer. Thankfully, they agree and we sit in the living room for a bit to talk.
"Do you think I did okay?"
He smiles, and runs his fingers through his hair. "Of course. I told you they would like you"
"I know..I was just a little anxious, you know.." I stumble over my words.
"This is going to sound horrible, but you're adorable when you're nervous"
We both laugh, and a buzz on my phone grasps my attention. "Who's that?" Kirby asks. We both look at the screen, and see that his sister had requested to follow me on instagram. "I told you that you two would become friends"
I blush, and accept her request before following her back.
We talk a little while longer, and he has to leave by 9:00. The boys have to be at the rink early for morning skate tomorrow. He promises me that he'll text me tonight. I assured him that he doesn't have to, but he insists. It makes me happy that he puts in so much effort into us.
