After the trunk of the car was loaded up with brand new scrapbooking supplies from a local store Ajax took me to a small restaurant. I babbled on and on about scrapbooking from the time we left the store until we reached a dark alley where the restaurant was located. At first I wrinkled my nose at the run down appearance, but Ajax led me inside with a beaming smile and the waitress just shot him an equally kind grin when he seated himself in a booth.
"Are you a regular here?" I asked as I moved to sit across from him. I rest my elbows on the gleaming table. At least this place was clean.
"Oh yeah, the food here is incredible. I'm surprised they don't know me by name, but they have my order down to a science." he answered as the waitress reappeared. She set down two beers, one for each of us. "I hope you like beer. Sorry, I should've asked before they brought it out."
"No worries, I don't mind beer, but I'm not much of a drinker."
"I feel like I could have pieced that together. I don't feel like alcoholism and scrapbooking go together," he teased.
"You'd be surprised. I'm not sure if I'd call it alcoholism, but those moms can definitely pound back more wine than is good for them. I never found it entraining to participate because your pictures all get placed crooked and your embellishments never look as good as you thought they did, but it's pretty fun to watch."
"Yeah, you don't really seem like the type to get wild. I think I would call you tame if anything," Ajax mused back.
I said nothing, just took a small sip of the beer before me. I couldn't help but think that leaving my city and driving well into the night was a little wild. So was going on a date with a man who had technically kidnapped you. And having him talk you to an orgasm with nothing but a door separating you was downright crazy.
But I wasn't the type of person to do that by myself. It all started when I met Ajax.
Ajax brought out the animal in me.
"Are you okay if I order a couple things and we just split them?" Ajax asked, breaking the thoughts that made my face flame.
"Sure, that's perfect," I replied, a little too fast. While Ajax spoke in soft German to the waitress who nodded along with everything he said I collected myself. When she turned away I cocked my head to the side and asked, "So how did you find this place?"
"It's really close to the college. Me and my buddies would come here after class and study or just decompress."
"You went to college?" I asked, raising an eyebrow, "I had no idea that princes who ruled over nothing had to go to school like the rest of us. How very normal of you."
Ajax just gave me a smile at my sharp words, "Of course I went to college. My parents wouldn't have allowed me to assume the title without going through the whole college process. My mom wanted me to have the most normal life she could give me despite my title."
"And what did you study?"
"Economics, accounting, political sciences, and a fair amount of biology and animal psychology. Just odds and ends that would allow me to get a Bachelors and help me be a better ruler."
"How would animal psychology help you rule?"
There was a wicked glint in his green eyes when he peered at me now. "We all have a little bit of an animalistic side."
I rolled my eyes to cover up my horror, almost wondering if he could read my mind. "Tell me about growing up royal. Has to be infinitely more exciting than growing up with a single mom," I encouraged.
There was a flicker of something that touched Ajax's face but it was gone before I could completely label it. "I'd love to hear about your childhood," he denied with a slow shake of his head. "Besides, being royal isn't nearly as exciting as everyone makes it seem to be. A lot of the excitement that I experienced came from my parents'...turbulent relationship so it was all second hand."
"How about I tell you a bit about my life and you tell me a bit about yours?"
"Deal. On a very basic level, my dad was shunned. My mom was the princess at the time and she felt the same way about him that you feel about me. It's hard to stay away from each other, even if we think it's the best thing to do."
"So this isn't just something that I feel?"
"No, everyone that we rule over feels it. and it will get stronger as those drugs wear off."
"Right," I whispered, "The drugs that my mom gave me."
For a long time I had thought that Ajax was crazy. I assumed he was just an entitled child that was used to getting his way and didn't understand that what he had done was wrong. But I no longer felt that way. How could I? Holly had been adamant that my mother was wrong and Holly loved my mom almost as much as I did. Adeline was pissed at my mother, absolutely livid beyond reason. Ajax talked about the medication like it was a poison. And no one that saw me being held against my will was concerned for my wellbeing. If I truly wasn't supposed to be there wouldn't one person be empathetic at the very least?
"You're getting stronger by the day," Ajax soothed, sensing the shift in my mood.
"How do you know?"
"How could I not? You look healthier, you have more energy, you even smell better," he chuckled.
"I smell better?" I shot back, raising an eyebrow.
"Oh yeah, the smell of rogu- rotting is lifting."
"I do not smell like rotting," I argued, but tucked my chin in to breathe in a whiff of myself, "I smell like my detergent and shampoo."
Ajax just laughed to himself, seeming pleased with the gentleness of our conversation.
A moment later our food arrived and our conversation tapered off. He explained what all the dishes were and I nodded along, tasting and venturing small bites, then massive mouthfuls when I found out how good it was. There wasn't much time for breathing around the food I was shoveling in, much less a full conversation.
And when it was time to drive home I had a full stomach and had spent day on my feet, surrounded by noise and movement. I appreciated the quiet as I let my head rest on the window as the city faded away.
"Thank you," I whispered as we stood outside my bedroom door. It felt like we had gone on a real first date and ended up at my house, on my porch with my parents just inside. It made the butterflies in my stomach flutter. "I had a really great time with you today."
"I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I had a really good time too. Seeing you run around the scrapbooking store melted me a little more than I would've ever thought." He smiled as he stared down at his feet, his fists in his pockets. "I won't be lucky enough to steal a good night kiss, would I?"
My heart leapt at the thought. I couldn't be so bold, could I?
I gave him a small smile and closed the small between us in one step. His head tipped down just as I peered up. My hand reached up on its own accord, just needing to touch him. my fingers brushed across the rough stubble on his jaw, making him suck in a gasp as our lips met.
My body was filled with the most delicious lightning, making me weak in the knees.
Ajax let out a soft groan when my lips moved against his. I had intended the kiss to be kind and slow, more affectionate than passionate. But my hands were in his hair. My mouth was open and willing for him. and his grip was steady and firm on my waist. With two small steps I was pressed up against my bedroom door. Trapped with his hard body keeping me pinned. Ajax's tongue swept against my bottom lip. I almost allowed him entrance.
But then I felt the intense heat growing between my legs.
"No," I whimpered, twisting away from him. I knew if I let him take this any further I wouldn't have it in me to stop it. And I couldn't let this happen. Not yet.
"Come on baby girl," Ajax panted in my ear, "Let me be your king."
I wanted to. God, I wanted to. The idea of Ajax being dominate and having me so completely made the heat in my core grow.
But my hand found the knob behind my back and I twisted. The door opened and I stepped into the safe zone of my bedroom, startling the man in front of me.
"Good night, Ajax," I breathed, then slowly shut the door.
