"Gracy! Graciella!" Mum yelled shaking me out of my memories.
"Are you ok sweet heart?" She asked love shining in her grey eyes.
"Yeah, I'm fine" I croaked.
"Looks like you've been to wonderland and back, Loka!" Giggled my brother who now stood in front of me, his muscular frame towering my small one, he was now 12 which was hard to believe as I was 14 and he stood a foot taller.
But... He was not a shifter. I knew he wanted to be with all his heart. But he wasn't. I was hoping he would, when he was seven but nothing happened. I placed animals in front of him but he didn't even waver. I gave up when he turned ten. Then I knew for sure that I, Graciella Loka James was the last shifter alive.
'I only wish' I thought remembering Sam's remark before.
"So what's for dinner" I sang delighted as the smell wafted in to my enhanced nose.
---AFTER DINNER---
"So... Tomorrow is the big day, huh?" Smirked Sam who sat on my bed.
"Yeah, I guess it is!" I grinned back and glanced around my bare room and the moving boxes full of all my crap in the corner.
"So you think I'll make new friends there?" Sam's eyes drifted to the floor as he's cheeks turned red.
"Of course you will!" I replied.
That it reminded me that I would have to make friends, I had never had a friend before. Sam and I had always been home schooled by our mum. Mum worked at home so it was easy to just get lost in the woods, being a shifter and all, and never ventured out into society. Sam did though, he made lots of friends but he never brought any over, afraid one of them might find out my secret.
But now mum's work has asked her to work at a town down south. She's a graphic designer and she's going to be the new manager there. And now Sam and I are going to the school there.
I only hope it's got heaps of rain forests!
A knock on the door brought me out of my thoughts.
"Come in?" We both called.
"Hey you guys, I was just wondering if you could put all your stuff in the truck, please?" Asked mum.
"Sure!", "No worries!" Came our replies.
"And... Umm, Gracey, can you put the couch in the truck as well?" She asked, slightly blushing.
"Yeah, ok." I answered.
"Ok thanks! Goodnight! Kiss kiss!" Called mum as she left the room.
"Ok, let's get started!" Said Sam jumping up from the bed and living the room.
"If you need any help, just call me!" Sam offered at the door, turning around.
"Um... I think I can handle it myself!" I giggled as I transformed into a big brown bear and placed the moving boxes on my back.
"Suit yourself then, you silly bear!" Sam poked his tongue out and left for his room.
I laughed again but this time it came out as a rumble in my bear throat.
I walked, or rather swaggered, out of my bedroom and down the stairs out into the drive way, I changed back into 'my' form (with clothes on by the way, it's weird, but i always have clothes on after i shift!) and placed the boxes in the truck.
I turned a round to admire our little blue cottage. It was a nice house with trimmed windows and it was surrounded by trees and the forest surrounded every corner of our land. Even though the paint had worn off and was now peeling, it still felt like home, well it is and will always be, I was born here raised here and now I was leaving. 'Leaving' I thought again.
I came back to reality when a hand waved in front of my face.
"Jeez Gracey!" Sam looked at me with a concerned face.
"What?" I sighed.
"Nothin, just go 'n' get the couch and then i'll get your other stuff, ok?"
"Ok..." I half smiled and walked off.
Sam knew I was tired I've changed my form 8 times today
First, a Chicken- I know, sounds wierd, but we needed eggs... Yeah, stuff just got freaky.
Second, a Mole- Mum lost her keys for the truck.
Third, a Tiger- I was practicing my skills with my new form.
Fourth, a Mountain Cougar- Sam wanted to race.
Fifth, a Lion- I saw a deer in the woods (I didn't hurt it, it was just instinctual!).
Sixth, a Cat- To climb up the tree.
Seventh, a Raven- Jumping down the tree, for fun.
Eighth, the brown bear.
My body was taking its toll for changing so many times, Dad used to say as he got older it was easier for him to change his form. I learnt all the forms I have from dads journal, he used to travel the world and he observed lots of animals drawing their body movements and everything about the animals qualities or 'gifts' dad would say. I study this book endlessly and now have 20 different forms of animals. I've entered many of my own animals as well such as the mountain cougar and brown bear.
I walked into the now bare lounge room and changed my form into a bear again. I picked up the lounge with my massive paws and walked out of the lounge room on two feet. I learned this trick by observing the bears fighting, when they try to dominate the other. Cool trick, huh?
I walked out side placed the lounge in the truck and changed into a sea eagle.
I spread my massive wings out and took off, straight for the forest. This was my last night at my home, so I might as well enjoy it.
