*Two years earlier (Shane's POV)*
"Shane," my pittle sister Emma whined at me.
"No, you're not going to that party and I don't care how much you beg, I'm not going to risk putting you in danger." I stated sternly.
Emma is only fourteen and for her to even think that I was going to let her go to a party with boys that will be leaking alcohol from their breath around her is beyond me. She's way too young to be partying and I was not going to allow her to go.
"Shane, please?" She continued to beg me.
"No."
She began to pout and I think I even saw her big brown eyes water. Maybe I should let her go..- wait. No.
"Please Shane, I know there's going to be boys there but I promise you nothing will happen to me!" She continued to press.
Since our parents gave us up for adoption when they freaked out once we shifted, I had to raise her.
And I'll be damned if I ever let her go to a party at fourteen.
She seemed to give up and she left the kitchen and stalked up the stairs. I wasn't satisfied until I heard her bedroom door slam upstairs.
I smiled to myself thinking she would be safer in her room away from parties and boys.
After I put away the now freshly cleaned dishes back into the wooden cabinet, I went into the living room and turned the tv on.
I scrolled through the guide and finally settled on some re runs of a show I missed while arguing with Emma.
I don't know when I fell asleep but I woke up by the phone ringing loudly inside the kitchen.
Sleepy and aggrivated, I got up from the sofa and stalked into the kitchen.
"Hello?" I said into the phone.
"Hello is this by any chance Shane? The brother of Emma Greyson?" A professional voice answered back.
A sudden feeling of dread overtook my being at that moment.
It took me a little while to get words to come out of my mouth.
"Yes. Has something happened?" I replied slowly. I was scared of the answer for some reason.
The voice on the phone seemed very hesitant and cautious to answer my question.
"I'm sorry to inform you of this news but Emma has been run over by a speeding vehicle while she was sneaking out across the road; she's on life support right now and if you come to Faith Hospital you may have some time before she passes."
When the words sunk in, I realized this was my fault. I hastily hung up and was at the hospital in no time.
I rushed past the nurses and other patients that seemed to be littering the white spotless hallways. I kept searching for her room and as soon as I found her room, I wish I was the one hooked up to the machine. Her face was bloody and was deathly pale. The only color on her face was from the purple bruises and the deep crimson red of her blood. I stood in front of her hospital bed and stared in shock.
I can't believe I let this happen to her, I thought to myself.
She opened her eyes weakly and as soon as she seen me, she showed her perfect white teeth smile at me. She raised her hand for me to take it before it was time for them to unhook the life support from her. I rushed to her side and took it and i sobbed into her hand as the doctors and nurses swept into the room to turn it off. I couldn't see them do it so I leaned up and kissed Emma on the forehead and whispered, "I love you," in her ear.
