KACE

As days went on, I felt like my job here was no more than occasional cleaning and nothing more.

Since Jalen's new relationship began, I didn't know if I was truly fulfilled, not just regarding my job... but personally. Something just felt off in the house.

I heard Annie get orders from the Jeongs in Korean earlier, and roughly, they told her,

"Keep an eye on Julianna today. We are going out."

Well, it'd be hard to do if she weren't even here. And now, sitting outside on my bike, I didn't know what to do. For days on end, I'd been trying to get her attention to prove to the family Annie and I knew what we were doing, but it didn't work out many times... and the family thought badly of us many times.

I'd been slapped with a fan to the arm many times in front of Jalen's own mother, and Annie smacked in the head with it.

I didn't want her or Annie  to notice the redness on my arm... they'd probably think I'm too weak to take any punishments.

I heard the door creak open, and out popped Jalen.

Man up, Kace. It's time to try again...

"Good evening, Lady Jalen! There's a nice sunset today!" I called. "Want to go for a bike ride? I can grab Annie and we can head to the forest again!"

"Oh, that sounds like fun, but I'm meeting Mike today! Maybe some other time!"

Just like usual... I'd been turned down.

As I saw her giddily skip away, I wondered if everything was truly over for me... and for Annie...

I wanted to enjoy it here... why was it so difficult?

The sharp smack of the fan still rang in my ears. I closed my eyes and tried to tune out the horrifying noise my thoughts were bringing back.

"Ugh," I groaned, my chest tightening as I spoke. I grasped that area of my suit gently, smoothing it out as I walked in.

"Any luck?" Annie asked as she flipped through the channels on the TV before turning it off in frustration.

"No," I basically choked out, shaking my head, hoping the sound of the TV would shield her ears from my despair.

She frowned and stepped up to me, looking up at me.

"Okay, you're doing it again," she muttered.

"Doing what?"

"Fiddling with your hair."

I twirled my slightly longer lock in my hair with my finger without even realizing.
