The next day Mr. and Mrs. Malfoy took their only son, Draco to Diagon alley. First though , they were on their way to knock turn alley. Narcissa would not hear of it, "absolutely not!" she said.
"Draco cannot go there, it is improper for people of our stature to walk into a place like that"
"indeed." Mr. Malfoy said in an amused, mysterious sort of voice. "I'll take the boy to Diagon alley, you do your business here" she said firmly, her nose wrinkling in disgust.
Draco walked into the robe store as a squat, smiling witch dressed in mauve came over, "Hogwarts dear? don't worry, I'm Madam Malkin". she said rather cheerfully. "pleasure to meet you" Draco said quietly as he was always taught.
As he was being fitted a scrawny sort of boy that looked to be his age walked in the door. The boy had messy black hair, round glasses and a very oversized shirt. Draco looked at him longingly, was that in style? "I'll never get to dress like other normal boys my age" Draco thought scornfully.
"Hello, Hogwarts too?" he asked hoping it was what sounded like an interested voice.
"yes" said the boy whom looked very overwhelmed now.
"My fathers next door buying my books" he lied, "and my mother's up the street looking at wands" at least that much was true Draco thought to himself.
"then, I'm going to drag them off to look at racing brooms. I don't see why first years can't have our own. I think I'll bully father into getting me one and I'll smuggle it in somehow. Have you got a broom?" he asked politely.
"no" the boy said rather shyly.
"Play Quidditch at all?"
"no" the boy said now sounding very subdued.
"I do" Draco said proudly. "father says it's a crime if I'm not picked to play for my house, and I must say, I agree. Know what house you'll be in?" Draco hoped he'd be in Slytherin so there'd be a friendly face.
"No" the boy said stupidly.
"well, no one really knows until they get there, do they?" Draco said trying to make the boy more comfortable now.
"but I know I'll be in Slytherin, all our family have been- imagine being in hufflepuff, I think I'd leave, wouldn't you?" "more like my father would Draco added in mentally.
"Mmm" the boy said absentmindedly.
Draco's eyes wandered "I say, look at that man!"
"That's Hagrid, he works at Hogwarts"
Draco heard an awful lot of bad things about Hagrid but, to be nice he asked "He's some sort of servant, isn't he?"
"He's the gamekeeper" the boy said and Draco got the feeling of disgust in the air, so decided to play with it. "oh, I've heard of him. He's a sort of savage- lives in a hut on the school grounds and every now and then gets drunk, tries to do magic, and ends up setting fire to his bed." Draco said hoping he didn't overdo it.
"I think he's brilliant" the boy said coldly.
"do you?" Draco asked, confused "why is he with you? Where are your parents?"
"they're dead" the boy said shortly, still cold.
"oh, sorry" then, Draco got anxious, "they were our kind, weren't they?" draco asked knowing full well if they weren't there was no way he could be friends with this boy.
"they were witch and wizard, if that's what you mean" the boy answered reluctantly.
"I really don't think they should let the other sort in, do you? They're just not the same" Draco said sounding just like his father. "they've never been brought up to know our way. Some of them have never heard of Hogwarts until they get the letter, imagine. I think they would keep it in the old wizarding families. What's your surname anyway?" Draco asked
But was interrupted by Madam Malkin.
