after abdul's unconditional wipeout, gyro managed to pull so far away from the pack that she could hardly make out his blond hair. it was clear to (y/n) that nobody had expected a dirty looking man like him to take such a lead. especially since the commentator wouldnt stop yapping about the mystery around gyro's name. but for her, she wasn't very much interested in his past. she was more interested in the secret of the spinning steel balls. and she knew mr. cripple was in a similar state of mind.
unfortunately, diego brando was still a good 3 meters in front of the cluster of horses. 3 meters and rising, as he was tactfully getting closer and closer to gyro. (y/n) had to admit that diego was smart, beyond average smart, and clearly deserved the title he gained. diego had discovered something about gyro's horse that would take a normal person much longer to figure out.
"could it be...?" the star pants wearing jockey next to her exclaimed. (y/n) looked over at him slightly to see his reaction. he was clearly shocked, she could tell by the look in his eyes. suddenly he made eye contact with her as if asking, almost begging, for what he found out to be wrong. she just nodded at him before looking back ahead. diego would be tough competition from now on.
she watched as diego dissapeared into gyro's blind spot, slowly maneuvering to gyro's rear. she didnt have to see gyro to understand how shocked he was. she gripped her reigns tightly and leaned down a bit further. it was almost scary how good diego was at horse racing.
"THEY'RE LINED UUUP! THEY'RE LINED UP! THEY'RE LINED UP!! THEY'RE LINED UUUUUP! HE'S TRAILING A NECK BEHIND FROM THE LEFT, AND DIO HAS LINED UP!! HOW COULD THIS BE?! ITS LIKE MAGIC! HE SUDDENLY MATCHED GYRO'S SPEED!! IT DIDN'T LOOK LIKE DIO WAS ACCELERATING AT ALL!!"
as gyro became more nervous she could tell his horse was picking up on those emotions and following suit. diego had been racing for awhile and could easily disrupt even the wisest of horses. diego had brains over gyro's brawn in this situation, taking the clear advantage between the two.
as (y/n) further studied the horse gyro rode on she began to pick up on it too. the special trait all horses have. it was something hard to pick up on unless you were well adept to human and horse behavior. she knew she wasnt as good as reading horses as diego was but she had a worrisome amount of practically useless knowlage on behavioural traits stuffed into her head. and this useless knowlage helped her discover that gyro's horse had a particular trait that would become his downfall. every eight breaths it took, the horse would lean to the side and slow down for just enough time.
enough time for diego brando to pull ahead of a very shocked gyro.
"HE PASSED! HE PASSED! HE PAAASSED!! DIEGO BRANDO HAS PASSED BY A NECK!! DIO IS IN THE LEAD!!"
"he wont be able to take back the lead again! the distance will be widened in the same way!" mr. cripple sure seemed worried about gyro dearest. (y/n) let out an amused snort as she looked at him. 'didnt he stick you to a roof like, two days ago?' she wasn't complaining about his enthusiasm though. mr. cripple could express himself quite comically through his expressions. his face made it seem as if he just saw his own brother trampled before his eyes.
she took a look back at gyro as his horse leaned to the side once again, losing speed. diego once again took advantage of that small window.
"ITS A HORSE LENGTH DIFFERENCE! UNBELIEVABLE! IT LOOKS LIKE GYRO IS THE ONE ACCELERATING! BUT DIO IS THE ONE UP FRONT! A GENIUS!! HES A GENIUS!! LOOKS LIKE NONE OTHER THAN MAGIC!!!"
(y/n) could tell diego and gyro were engaged in conversation now but she was slowly losing interest. this was rather boring to her actually. she took a lazy glance around at the other competitors only to notice they were all focused on the ones in the lead. she let out a bored and exaggerated sigh before leaning forward into her horses mane. her horse let out a huff in acknowledgment. she peeked over at the platinum blondie next to her only to catch him staring back. she raised a curious eyebrow and he only replied with a confused look. she supposed he found her strange.
"what's your name by the way!" she shouted over the thrumming of hooves. he looked at her startled, as if not expecting her to actually speak to him. she only grinned and sat up straight again without using her hands.
"im (y/n)! now will you tell me your name so i cant stop mentally addressing you as 'mr. cripple'!" he scrunched up his face after processing what she said.
"im-!" he was cut off as the commentator started yelling quite loudly over the speaker again. (y/n) let out an exasperated sigh. 'mr.cripple it is then.'
"THERE'S THE 12,000 METER MARK! ITS THE DRIED UP RIVER! DIO, OR DIEGO BRANDO, IS THE FIRST TO CROSS THE BRIDGE!"
(y/n) hummed softly, looking at the barely stable looking bridge fast approaching. she couldn't see this ending very well in any scenario. the bridge was suffering from severe dry rot, she noticed. awhile back she picked up an article talking about how a new type of fungi called serpula lacrymans, more commonly known as dry rot fungus. it was discovered to be the cause of wood in buildings and bridges to crack and rot. a very useless tid bit of information at the time, but now it seemed to pay off at least a bit. the weakened state of the wood could most likely be broken very easily by gyro's steel balls. she smiled excitedly at the thought, this is exactly the kind of thrill she was waiting for.
"HE'S ADVANCING AGAIN! HE CAN'T CATCH UP! HE CANT CATCH UP! GYRO ZEPPELI JUST CANT CATCH UP ANYMORE!"
she could hear the amplification of the hooves from the horses pounding on the somewhat hollow wood. her anticipation seemed to grow as she eagerly leaned forward more on her horse. she watched gyro with pleading eyes, just begging him to make a move.
it seemed almost in slow motion as she watched gyro reach of a steel ball. instead of openly throwing it at the wood like she expected, he instead used it on his own horse. the spinning rippled down the horses leg and dispelled into the wood, causing the boards to loosen and give way beneath the brando's feet (more accurately, his horses hooves). she could practically smell the shock wafting off the brit. and god did it smell like heaven to her.
"THE BRIDGE?!?...WHAT HAPPENED?! WHAT HAPPENED?! THE BRIDGE PLATES ARE SHATTERED! AND GYRO ZEPPELI IS CHARGING THROUGH IT! DIO CAN'T CROSS! DIO HESITATED! DIO CAN'T CROSS THE BRIDGE!"
as she got over her excited stupor, she finally noticed that the direction of the pack seemed to shift as they were forced to take the longer route through the dried river. she furrowed her brows a bit, looking at the broken bridge. she had managed to lose the front line spot she had whilst watching gyro. which means she also lost her crippled buddy. and she still didnt know his name. after debating her pros and cons she just decided to throw all caution to the wind. she turned her horse away from the pack.
"WHATS THIS?! A COMPETITOR IS HEADING STRAIGHT TWORDS THE BRIDGE! ARE THEY INSANE?!? HAVE THEY LOST IT!?"
