reprisal v.

My vision’s getting blurrier

by the second;

it’s dark in all the places

I’ve never even noticed.

I never thought I’d be on his hit list,

but now there’s a searing pain

in my stomach

and I’m wondering what the cause of death will be

this time.

The last thing I see

before I close my eyes

is that bright purple jacket

he’s wearing

and even though I can’t see well enough

to spot his teeth

I know he’s smiling;

trying to finish me off with

his own satisfaction.

I expect him to say something

before he leaves,

but instead he just breaks

Einstein in half

and tosses him to the floor

beside me.

I never thought that

I’d be buried

next to

my enemies,

but here we all are,

a few feet of soil

and an inch or two

of fancy wood

and velvet

away

from holding hands.

Life is weird.
