Side Effect

Side effect.

Late in the winter of my seventeenth year,

It had been decided I was depressed.

Depression; a side effect of cancer

                     No…

A side effect of dying.

I was in fact THE side effect.

Sleepless nights,

Constantly worrying,

 Not eating,

But these weren’t my side effects,

They were hers,

My mothers.

Side effects of Cancer: relentless mutilation

We are mere frogs on dissection tables,

                       Being poked and prodded at,

In the hope that we might survive a few more years.
