We were ushered inside of the building and to a spot that looked like an old, run-down hospital. Doctor Kegley explained what was happening to us and how our bodies would respond to the chemicals being pumped into our blood system. Max met Mary and believed that this wouldn't kill us and she allowed them to strap her down to the table. The tables were standing up and had a glass door that swung open. There were straps on the table that held our torso, wrists, and ankles, I assumed that we would move so it restricted our movements. We walked up the tables and looked at each other as we were getting strapped up. They closed the doors and I said a silent prayer to make it out alive, then I heard buzzing. It was so loud that I couldn't hear my own thoughts and there was fog in the tube, I remembered I couldn't move my hands when I tried to wipe the glass. I felt myself fall asleep and let it happen, it was warm and cozy that it felt natural to my body.

In my dream, I could hear Patrick laughing. I looked to where I thought he was and saw him and Max smiling and having a good time, they looked so happy. I wanted to be like that. I miss being like that. Max turned her head, smiled and waved, then she turned back around. I woke up by hearing what I thought was someone opening up a soda bottle, I opened my eyes and blocked them from the light. When I could finally open them without blocking them from the harsh light I looked around and saw Mary walking up to me with two other people.

"Carrie, this is David and John. They underwent the procedure with me." Mary spoke like she was a mother and everytime she would talk to me, it was comforting. I waved at David and John and they waved back to me. They looked just like Mary, still young even though they were about fifty years old. I went over to where Max stood, she looked awkward not knowing what to do or say, and I hugged her tightly. She hugged me back with the same strength and that's when I knew I never wanted her to leave me.

"With this serem inside of you, you will be immortal and have powers that goes along with how you were in the military. Since you both were in the Marines for a year before the... incident... you should be able to get adjusted to the serem, do you understand?" Doctor Kegley spoke stern, but I figured he wanted us to listen to him for what was going to happen to us over the next week or so. Max and I nodded our heads in approval. Mary told me that it took at least two weeks for her to get adjusted to having powers inside of her and it took a week to actually see and effects of being injected. Doctor Kegley led us out of the facility, after making sure we weren't going to pass out, so we walked to the bus stop and rode to my house.

We walked inside and went upstairs to get ready for bed, when we left it was only noon. I looked at my clock and noticed it was around eight p.m. I decided to get ready for bed, I grabbed a towel and washcloth and started my shower. I was washing my hair when I noticed that the shampoo kept washing out, I started to freak out. I took my hands out of my hair and realized that I could project water from my hands, I started screaming. I grabbed my towel, still screaming and water shooting out of my hands, and tried to dry myself off. I put my clothes on to the best of my ability and swung the door open. When I went into the hallway I heard the smoke alarm go off and smelt fire downstairs. My dad and Patricks' mom was trying to get Maxs' hands off fire, they all turned to me when they got wet and Max threw her hands near mine to get hers to stop throwing flames out. I started to scream more, because I didn't want to get burned, and ran away from Max. I ran into the kitchen as Max stayed on one side, we were opposite to each other, I blasted my hand-water to her hands. After she calmed down the flame kept getting lower and lower until there was nothing left, that happened to mine as well.

"I didn't think it would be that soon we got our powers." I spoke up. My dad came out from the living room.

"What is going on! Max has fire coming out of her hands, you have water coming out of yours? Someone please explain." Max and I both stared at each other for a few minutes.

"You won't believe me dad."

"I just watched you and Max have fire and water blast out of your hands. Please talk to me."

"So, pretty much, we have superpowers?"

"Well no duh, I just witnessed it." He put his hands on his hip sassily.

"This guy, Doctor Kegley, told me that I was qualified, along with Max, to join the 'Defenders of Home' and we took that offer and then they operated on us and put this, thing, into our bodies and now we have superpowers." He looked at me and stopped being sassy, he was always like that, and walked over to me. He opened his arms and hugged me.

"That's the first thing you talked to me about in months. Ever since you came home you've been distant. I'm not mad you did this, just happy that you told me." His voice was soft and slightly breaking. I felt water on my head and assumed he was crying. We broke apart when we heard the phone ringing, all of us turned our heads to watch it. Max went up to it and picked it up.

"Hello?"

"Is this the Santeria residence?" She put her hand over it. "They want to know about you." She took her hand off as I ran over to her from the living room. I put my ear near it, daring not to breath.

"Yes, this is it."

"Tell Mr. Santeria we're coming for him." Buzzing came out from the phone, I grabbed it out of her hands and slammed it down.

"Dad, we have to go." He looked worried, but he ran upstairs. I followed closely behind him. I watched as he packed a few things, he grabbed a picture of him, my mom, and me and continued to close it. He looked into my eyes and I could've sworn I seen regret in them. We ran downstairs and I grabbed my keychain and started the van, I drove to the hospital where I was just at earlier and knocked on the metal door. It was painfully slow to watch it open, especially when I knew someone was out for my dad. Doctor Kegley was at the door when it opened far enough for someone to fit through.

"What do you need?"

"Someone just threatened me through the phone saying they're coming for him," I pointed up at my dad and he waved awkwardly,"I need your help, please."

"Never, in my time of knowing you, have i heard you say please. Come in." I smiled up at him and grabbed my one of my dads' hands and pulled him in, Max was the last one to enter. Frank led me through the facility and took me down a set of stairs, he opened the door and there was an apartment. A cozy television set, a radio, a couch (which Frank showed us turned into a bed) a stove, a refrigerator, a microwave, and some cupboards. Frank told my dad to get comfortable since he needs to stay here until we are positive that it was just a threat and no one is going to go through with it. I gave my dad one last hug before I head back upstairs, in the moment my feet hit the upstairs, the whole facility shook. I looked at Frank and he looked scared. Mary, David, and John got into these tube things and the scientists grabbed Max and I and put us into the tubes as well. They shoved masks onto our face and everything went black, the second time I had this happen. The last thing I heard was a loud crash and screams from the scientists and after that everything went black.
