When Cooper woke up, he could hear his heart beating fast in his ears. He looked over at the picture frame on his desk, and let himself cry. He didn’t know why it bothered him so much. It had been two years now since the fight, and Travis seemed to be doing fine. Cooper missed him though. None of his friends ever understood him the same way Travis did. Travis was such a beacon of light in Coopers life, and now… Cooper was miles away from that beacon. Every May, Cooper’s body is filled with dread. He has the same dream, the same memory playing over and over in his head, almost every other night. On the 27th, he walks to Travis’ old house and sits on the curb, hoping Travis will show up and fight his past fears. But he hasn’t, and Cooper spends the night on that curb alone.
Tomorrow is the 27th, and Cooper wants to do something different. This year, he wants to go into the house by himself. No one’s in it. No one has lived in it for years. He knew Travis needed to go back there, but Travis disagreed. Cooper understands now. It was a lot of trauma to go through and Cooper was wrong for trying to pressure him into it. Waking up from the memory of how shitty he was on that night, he couldn’t help but put himself down. Sure, it was two years ago, after sophomore year of high school, but it was still a really shitty thing to do. Now, having graduated high school and held onto that night like a rat caught in a trap, Cooper’s guilt grew.
School was out. He would have no way of seeing how Travis was doing. He knew he could just text him or something, but he couldn’t bring himself to do it. It had been so long, and Cooper felt so messed up for doing what he did back then, that he just couldn’t. He probably didn’t even have the same phone number. ‘I wonder if his voice still sounds the same,’ Cooper thought as he sat up in his bed and rubbed his eyes clear of tears. He picked up his phone only to find that it was dead. After plugging it up, Cooper walked to his desk and propped up the picture frame.
It was a picture of him with Travis’ family at the park. Cooper and Travis were in the front, Travis’ parents were in the back. They were all wearing blue, for Travis’ birthday party. Travis wore a shiny blue crown on his head, and so did Cooper. Travis didn’t want to be the only one with one on, so he had gotten Cooper one too.
‘Here, Coopie.’ ‘W-what’s this?’ ‘I wanted you to have one too!’ ‘Omg we’re twinning Trav.’ ‘Shut uuuup.’
The glass on the frame was cracked in the bottom right corner, an imperfection from when it fell off the wall during their fight. Cooper had stolen the picture without anyone stopping him, which was another thing he felt guilty for about that night. Liam hadn’t asked for it back, and Cooper was sure he noticed it was gone.
Before he could get too caught up in his thoughts, Cooper walked to his bathroom and turned on the shower. ‘Another long day of nothing,’ he thought. The water was steaming hot, but that didn’t bother him today. ‘Maybe I’ll go skating later today… But then I’ll just get all sweaty. I could text Schlatt and see if he wants to come over. Carson too. Ooh! I have that pizza coupon!’ He sighed, smiling to himself. “Today doesn’t have to be a nothing day,” He said out loud, tilting his head back into the stream of water. ‘I don’t need to be a depressed piece of shit right now. It’s pizza time, baybey.’
