School went surprisingly fast after that. Mr. Suave subbed again for gym and when I got to art there was no teacher, which wasn’t surprising since we only had a total of seven kids. Just a note on the board that said our first assignment was to do whatever we wanted and turn it in by Monday’s class. We all left a little early and I made it to my locker right as the bell rang. Dev came running down the hall.

“You ready for practice?” she asked excitement slipping into her tone.

“Yeah I am.”  I said smiling the coach was going to make captain and position announcements today. I looked around, “Hey where’s Ethan?”

“His coaches wanted them out at the fields as soon as the bell rang.” She said shrugging her shoulders.

We made it to the locker rooms and got changed quickly making it to the field in no time. When all the girls finally came out, coach walked over to start talking.

“Alright ladies! I got a couple announcements before we begin practice. First your positions!

Both Dev and I were put as back defenders.

“Secondly, your captains. I’ve decided on two this year. They have played for me since their freshman year and have not once given up on me or the team. They are hard workers and great encouragers. That is why I have picked,” Dev and I looked at each other, “Dev and Peyton!” coach finished.

There were cheers all around and then the girls dog piled on top of Dev and I.

“Alright, Alright!”, the coach smiled, “because it is the first day back, I’ll start us off with and easy practice.”

Dev and I looked at each other knowing that coaches easy days were her running days.

“The trail around the school is 7 miles around. I want you all to run it and then when you get back you may leave.” We grabbed our sticks and got into two lines, Dev and I in front.

“Alright ladies! Are you ready to get this over with!” shouted Dev and she was meet with a chorus of yeas and yups. About half way, I looked back to see how the girls were doing. Running wasn’t easy for some and that is why Dev and I ran every day during the summer to get ready for this and even do it on the weekends during the season. I saw that three girls were struggling in the back.

“Hey Dev, I’m going to go and help those in the back you keep going and lead the rest to the finish. I’ll pick up and stragglers” I said and she nodded. I headed to the back to start encouraging the girls to keep going.

“You got this guys just keep it up! Your over half way there, just keep it up a little longer.” I hadn’t noticed the coach was following in one of the schools golf cart until she spoke.

“Or you can always stop and hop on to here and we can be all done.”

“Sorry coach, that’s not happening! These girls got it!” I shouted at the coach. Turning back to the girls, “Look over there! You see the fields? I want you to muster up all the energy you have and sprint to the finish!”

The girls looked at each other and the finish and began to run faster.

“There you go!” I said. The other girls that had already finished were also cheering on the girls to finish. When we finally made it to the field everyone cheered for them.

Coach got out of the golf cart and walked over to us. “I thought I said you could leave when you were done with the run?” Coach said in a hard tone.

Amanda, a junior, stepped up. “Well you see coach; the rest of our team had not finished the run there for we were not done.” Amanda stated.

The coach smiled. “Now that is the making of a great team! You ladies did very well today, I’m proud of all of you. But I would like any girl that had trouble to day to make sure you also start running at home and on the weekends to keep your endurance up. That’s it ladies have a wonderful weekend see you Monday!” she said and started the golf cart up to take it back.

“Alright ladies that was a good practice. Make sure you pick up and trash you see and have a nice weekend.” I said and got good byes back.

Dev and I walked over to her car when everyone had left and got in. I looked over to Dev. “You wanna spend the weekend over at my place?” I asked?

“I would love to.” She said smiling. “Should we invite Ethan too?”

“Yeah I’ll leave him a text so that when he’s done with practice he’ll get it.” I stated as I sent the text. This should be a fun weekend with my best buds.
