We arrive at the hospital in less than ten minutes. Amy is going on about how I got her this unicorn. I have to pretend this actually happened, and this feels absolute terrible.
"Come, little one. Let's go inside," I say. She nods her head eagerly and slides out after me. She grabs my hand as we wait for Leo and my heart squeezes. This little girl isn't even mine, but I'm already so attached to her. Part of me wants this girl to never remember who her parents are, and the other wants this to be done with quickly.
I sign her in and sit down in the waiting area, listening for her name to be called. It feels like five decades have passed when I hear it.
"Amy," the doctor calls. I stand with Amy in my arms and walk over to the doctor. He smiles and walks inside the double doors. We follow him as he stalks through the hallway to our room. Amy observes the people in the room who are all banged up and hooked up to breathing ,asks and heart monitors.
"Is that going to be me," she asks me, her voice trembling with fear.
"No baby, that's not going to be you," I tell her. She buries her face when I tell her not to look.
"Here you are," the doctor exhales dramatically. I set her down on the bed and turn the TV to nick Jr. She cheers when wow wow wubbsy is on. "Her doctor will be here in a moment."
After he leaves, Leon pulls me onto his lap. I'm startled by the suddenness of his action. He nuzzles his face in my neck and wraps his arms around my waist. Amy looks over at us in curiosity.
"What are you doing to mommy," she interrogates. He's about to answer when she hops off the bed and jumps into my lap. "This is my mommy, you can't have her, daddy."
"How do you think you were born," he asks her. I don't hear her answer over my gasp. I bet my face is as red as an apple. It instantly dies down when she unexpectedly wraps her arms around my neck.
"Hello, my name is doctor Reynolds, I will be your doctor today. And who is it that we're looking at," she says, walking in. She doesn't seem phased by the situation.
"Amy, sweetheart, you have to sit on the bed," I say to her. She pouts but listens to what I say.
"What seems to be the problem," she queries. I motion for her to step outside the the room for me to tell her this.
"She thinks we are her biological parents. I saved her from a car crash and when she came to, she called me mommy. And she thinks Leo is her father. Her father was in the car when its happened.
"When her mother showed up and tried to take her from me, she refused to go to her saying she wasn't her mother. So I brought her here to see if we could get her memory back," I explain.
"I see. Something like this happens sometimes. Some may get there memory back, but some aren't so fortunate. She isn't at the age when she can just wake up and realize that you aren't her real parents. So you'll just have to raise her as if she is your own," Dr. Reynolds says. I hear a sharp intake of breath and I glance to my left. The parents of Amy are standing about three feet away from us.
"I will not allow it! I cannot allow this inexperienced teenager to take care of my child," the mother hollers. The other doctors shush her, for her voice is echoing throughout the silent halls.
"She's going to have to. Think about it, if you try to take her away from this young lady, then she will never accept you, even if she does get her memory back," the doctor says. They seem flabbergasted at first, but then the father storms up to me and grabs a handful of my collar.
"This is not over. I'm taking you to court, you hear me," he says through gritted teeth. His wife tries to pull him away, but he pushes her down. "I will not let you steal my daughter."
"Believe me, I don't want to take her way from you. You should be thanking me, anyways, because if it weren't for me she would still be crying in the back of that car. All of you would have still been stuck," I tell him.
"We're suing you." He retreats back to his wife's side.
"OK. I'll take your money as a thanks." I head back inside the room, brushing off my collar.
"You OK? I'm gonna go whip his," he begins to say it but I cut him off.
"No need for that. Hes taking me to court to sue me. " I tell him. I sigh and turn to him. "What should we do? The doctor said there's nothing we can do but raise her like our own, and it is little to no chance that she will regain her memory."
"I guess this counts as a home ec class then," he says, and I know this isn't a joke, but I laugh anyways. We go back into the room to find Amy passed out on the bed.
We loom at each other and smile. Well that was easy. Now all we have to do is explain it to my parents, which will the most arduous task in my life.
