"Eat your food Yuri. You know ma and dad would be upset if they found out I fed you chicken nuggets from a fast food restaurant." Another rare occasion I was allowed out the house and that was only because I had to pick Yuri, my baby sister up from her summer program. She told me she was hungry and begged and begged for chicken nuggs. Something my parents never allowed either one to have.
"I know and that's why I love you Axey." She squealed. I couldn't help but spoil her, because my parents were already tough on her. Growing up I didn't have anybody to do what I did for her, so I was going to try my best to show her the fun in life even when I didn't know myself. "And I Love you too little one." I reached over and ruffled her hair.
"Axey, I got a question. Do you think the funny lady is pretty?" Yuri asked swinging her legs, every now and then accidentally nicking my leg, making me gently grab her knee to get her to stop. Now long after she would start her kicking again. "Uhmm... Yeah, where did that question come from?" I look over to the girl dancing in the lobby and immediately blush. It was her, my crush and honestly I didn't think I would see her again.
"I don't know, it just you keep looking at where she's at and I may be eight but I can see perfectly well. My optometrist says 20/20." Yuri was a insightful kid. Too smart for her own good. "I'm not staring at her, just in that direction." I hadn't even notice I was even staring that long or that obviously. "You should tell her." I pulled my gaze from the girl and back to Yuri.
"Tell who, what?" I was really hoping she wasn't talking about who I thought she was. Me talking to her would never happen, I wasn't that bold. "Tell dancing funny lady she's pretty. Girls like that sorta thing. I would know I'm a girl." I couldn't believe I was taking dating advice from my 8 year old little sister. I had to be desperate at this point.
I feigned a shocked face joking with Yuri. "Whaaaat a girl and this whole time I thought you were my little brother." She didn't take too kindly to my wisecrack and crossed her arms. "Yes I'm a girl and if I was a boy I would still be cuter than you." She expressed then stuck her tongue out at me.
I chuckled and started cleaning our trash from the table. "Of course, are you done yet?" Yuri stuck the last piece of her food in her mouth and stood up. "It's finished, Ms. Hopkins told me done is for turkeys in the oven and you aren't a turkey. A chicken maybe, for not talking to the girl." I rolled my eyes and shook my head. "Really Yuri?" Though she was right, I was a chicken. I was afraid of rejection and the embarrassment that would follow. Have you seen her and then there was me. I just didn't have the courage to speak to her or any other girl for that matter or any reason.
"Yep, in my eight years on earth I have yet to see you go on a date or a girl come over besides Mei, and you'd have to be really desperate to cross that bridge." I laughed, but deep down she was right. Completely and utterly right, but I didn't want to discuss this with my little sister no matter how much sense she was making. "I'm working on it okay." She sighed more upset about my situation than was. "At that rate, I'll be married with kids by the time you get a girlfriend."
"Hey." I push her shoulder and she looks up to me laughing. The next few weeks came and went and the morning of the first day of school was upon us. I tried to see the girl as much as possible, now that I knew where she worked, sometimes it would work, others not so much.
After my daily morning routine I got dressed and went downstairs to have breakfast with my family and got dropped off to school. Mei was sleeping in, quote because it was her last year of high school.
I walked through the halls dodging people horse playing, people scrolling their phone and not looking where they're walking, and the mindless chatter that consumed it all. I finally spied my locker from behind a couple making out in front of it. "E-e-excuse me, t-tha that's m-my locker t-t-there." They continued kissing and I sighed giving up access to my locker, I would just have to wait til after home room. I pulled out my schedule and saw that I was in Mr. Barrington for Homeroom and first period.
I didn't have him before, but I hurt he was a pretty tough teacher. I was up the challenge though, just like any other teacher I figured if you didn't give him trouble it would be a breeze. I found the class and a seat in the back of the class in the corner. I chose here so I wouldn't get that much attention and it would be a easier route to escape since it was by the back door.
I unpacked my bag because even though it was the first day they would still want us to take notes on the syllabus and rules for the school year. I didn't mind, it would in a way help get my brain ready for the learning that was expected for us. I made good grades already, but it couldn't hurt to be even more prepared.
As I set up my desk with my school supplies a shadow blocked the light that shined on the desk. I looked up carefully and slowly and I almost swallowed my tongue. It was her and she looked pissed.
