~~~Day One: Monday ~~~
We were scattered around the auditorium, the more nervous ones hunched over their scripts in the back seats and the experienced ones in the front row, or even perched on the edge of the stage. Whether this was your first time under the lights or you've been here year after year, its impossible not to be nervous before an audition.
My friends and I were perched on the edge of the stage, criss cross style with our scripts in our laps, running lines like there was no tomorrow, which there wasn't if we bombed the audition.
"Couldn't keep quiet, could we. Just had to let him stay, didn't we? Serve him tea, sit in the masters chair, pet the pooch!" My friend read, reading the lines as dramatically as he could.
Another boy swept in with the responding characters line, "I was trying to be hospitable!"
"Hello? Is anyone here? Papa, are you here?" I placed my hand like a shield on my forehead, pretending like I was peering into the darkened hall.
"Wow Sophie, you're pretty much off book already!" The first reader exclaimed.
"What can I say, theater is my only social life," I joked.
"Ok, where were we?" The first kid asked,
"Calm down Tam, we can afford a few seconds of conversation,"
"We were at Chip's first line," the girl to my right said, sitting up straighter and preparing to read the line, "Momma. There's a girl in the castle!" She read the line in the most nasally voice she could muster, causing the whole group to burst out in laughter.
"That was great Linh!"
The door squeaked open, startling me. The audition was starting in ten minuets, who would ever show up this late? I glanced up at the auditorium door to see a tall athletic boy walk in, pushing his dark hair back out of his eyes. I watched his friends wave him over and he jogged across the auditorium with his backpack and his audition packet tucked under his arm. I couldn't seem to take my eyes off him, even after he'd sat down and started rehearsing with his friends.
"Sophie? Are you awake?" Linh asked, giving my shoulder a nudge, "It's your line, unless you want me to read for Belle of course.."
"What? Oh! Sorry where are we?" I asked, flipping a few pages in my audition packet.
"we were at 'What's in the w-'" Tam started to direct me,
"Ah, What's in the west wing?" I jumped in, finishing the line.
"It's forbidden!" He barely got through the line before the director hopped up onto the stage behind us and shooed us into the seats.
"Alright kids, can I have everyone in the front few rows of seats please?" she waved us all into the seats. "So, here's how this is going to work, I'm going to have each of you perform your monologue and singing solo, then I'll call you if I need a callback. But I never need callbacks. Got it?"
Everyone but the freshman knew what she was looking for in response, "Yes Mrs. Ruewen!" We chanted.
"Good, first up, Tam S!" The boy who had been reading for Cogsworth hopped up on stage. He read a relatively long comedic monologue about Disney land and managed to get through it without fidgeting with his shirt or hair. Then he sang a 16 measure excerpt from be our guest, his pick off the list of choices.
