*Fitz's POV*
The darkness pressed in around the car, who's only defense from the night was the headlights that bore into the shadows and cleared the way for a few feet of sight. Despite how late it was, only one of the five people in the car was asleep. Dex was in the very back of the van, curled up under a layer of blankets with his feet tucked up on the seat next to him. Of course, a picture of him had already been tweeted and it was a miracle that he remained asleep through the conversation in the car. Keefe was in the passenger seat next to me recapping a tourist interaction from the day dramatically. My laughter quite outweighed Biana and Linh's; both of them were sitting in the middle row of seats and were beginning to drift off, leaning up against each other.
"Fitz can you try to be a little less boisterous, I'm trying to sleep," Biana mumbled, shushing me. I laughed, glancing over my shoulder at her for one second. But before I could return my gaze to the road, a horn blared and suddenly headlights were all I could see. I jerked the handle, hearing shouts from the other people in the car. I felt the car crash right through the guard railing. Suddenly, we were in open air.
*Sophie's POV*
It had been a slow week, a slow month, a slow life if you ask some of the older guys. Not much ever happened in our department, but tonight we were loading into the trucks, the helicopter even, and we were off.
The car had been wedged on a rock ledge around 100 feet in the air. A semi had swerved into the other lane of a two lane road and the car had swerved to avoid it, sliding off the road in the process. Apparently, when the car hit the railing, it flipped, careening nose first down the steepest incline on that stretch of road. The safety railing had lodged in the wheels and right now, the van was wedged loosely in the stone, held up mostly by a collapsing safety railing, with five people inside. I was geared up with a safety harness and a small headlight since it was dark, and ready for my first big job. The helicopter flew as low to the car as we could get, and they sent me down on a tow rope. The air was cool and I felt my stomach clench as I got close to the car.
"You all have to remain calm; we have to move quickly and carefully so the car doesn't slip anymore," I said to them through a microphone, noticing that they were all around my age. "I'm going to get you tied in one at a time starting in the back of the vehicle." I took a deep breath, it would do no one any good if I was panicking.
The first thing I could do was get a harness around the first boy in the car, a smaller blonde boy. I carried him up to the helicopter and repelled back down. Next I took the first of the two girls from the center row, she trembled against me as I carried her safely up into the helicopter, hiding behind her long black hair. When we reached the helicopter, her friend comforted her easily. There were only three left. The first of the three was a curly brown haired girl who exited the car surprisingly gracefully but as she stepped out, the helicopter ducked and she bumped the car. It slipped a foot or two, causing the metal railing to screech horribly and a suitcase from the back of the car to tumble forward. Both boys still in the car shouted in fear as the suitcase hit the lighter haired of the two. I got the girl back up to the copter and they informed me in my earpiece that there was a problem with the cord system and I had to hurry up. I lowered back down to the car, to help the blonde boy, whose foot was wedged in between the seat and the suitcase.
"Don't move," I warned them, leaning in to slowly pull the suitcase from the car. It tumbled down into the gorge below but no one here had time to worry about that. I helped the dark haired man from the car, he was also wearing glasses and one of them had a large crack across the glass. Just as he stepped out of the car, someone yelled from the cliff above and the metal screeched again, plunging a few more feet and tipping the car further forward so that the last man was sitting fully on the windshield.
"No one move," I helped the blonde haired boy up to the copter and returned for the last time.
"The glass is breaking!" The last boy gasped.
"Very slowly, move this direction," I told him. He reached out for my arm, I reached for his hand too. And then my rope jerked me down and swung me to the side a little.
"What happened?" He asked
"Good question. Guys, what's happening up there?''
"The cord jammed! We can't bring you up or send anyone down!"
I sighed.
"Is something wrong?" the boy asked me again.
"What's your name?" I asked him.
"F-Fitz," he stuttered.
"My name is Sophie. Ok Fitz, you need to trust me,"
"Ok-" the cracks on the glass spread again, covering the whole windshield now. I saw his hands trembling at his sides. I couldn't maneuver myself in the air and I was at an awkward angle to get him out of the car.
"Fitz, you need to jump,"
"What do you-"
"I mean, I can't move from here and I need you to get off that glass and to me, so you need to trust me and jump,"
Fitz locked his jaw and stared at me,
"Now!" I shouted as the glass cracked again. He leaped out the window, kicking the car frame pretty hard but I caught him easily and quickly wrapped a length of cord securely around his waist so his weight wasn't completely on my arms. The car was sliding and I knew it was going down, so I pushed off it with my foot so we were swinging away from it and wouldn't get dragged down with it. Fitz clung to me; his arms wrapped around my neck as we swung away from the car. The van slid away down into the gorge and we swung back through open air.
"I've got him!" I said into my earpiece. I heard cheers from the helicopter.
"We can't bring you up but we're going to fly you over to the ground," the pilot told me.
"Fitz, they're going to fly over and lower us onto the landing site," I told him, we were still swinging back and forth slightly. The helicopter flew up, lifting us up out of the gorge, and lowered us down onto the pavement. The whole time we were flying I was talking softly to Fitz, asking him questions about himself and him asking me questions back. I landed solidly on my feet and so did Fitz, he was a few inches taller than me but not much.
"Thanks," He squeaked once I had I unclipped both of us from the helicopter and it had radioed in with us that they were going to go land at the local hospital.
The paramedics rushed over and fussed over Fitz and me. I waved them off, pulling of my headlamp. I checked on Fitz just in time to hear his verdict from the paramedics,
"The only damage may be some bruising from the impact but you're good to go!"
The paramedics cleared out and I approached Fitz.
"Are you single?" I asked, he smiled and shook his head, "Can I see your hand?"
He gave it to me and I scrawled my number on the palm with a sharpie. My radio buzzed just as I finished and I turned to answer it.
"Thank you!" he mouthed and gave me a wink, waving at me with the hand I had written on.
I turned my back with a huge grin on my lips.
