"Long distance relationships suck!" I crib to my long distance best friend, Swetha, after a couple of weeks. Virat was gone again and I was losing my mind.
"You are talking as if you have had multiple relationships and multiple
Points of reference. This is the only 'close' or 'long' or 'any' relationship you have ever had.""You know what I mean!" I snap at her.
"Hey, here is a brilliant idea, why don't you call your long distance boyfriend and snap at him. This seems like it's his problem."
"I can't do that....." I crib some more.
"I know I am going to regret asking this but why not?"
"...Coz he is so busy there. He is neck deep in work. I cannot bother him."
"Ah, so you choose to bother me."
"If Virat is sad, he buries himself in more work. If I am sad, I cannot even hold the brush, forget painting anything other than an apple or a banana. Even those look rotten. This isn't fair."
"Um..."
"And I have my midterm."
"Yep.."
"I have to do this project. My project mate is already upset with me."
"What's there to be upset? Ask her to do all the work."
"It's a him. His name is Chris. Actually he wouldn't mind doing all the work. But, I can't ask him."
"Oh, this is interesting. Another guy, huh?"
"What?"
"Nothing. Carry on. Why can't you ask him to do the work? You do all the work all the time?"
"It would give him the wrong idea."
"Ahah!"
"What?"
"So, there is something going on. Does Virat know? It's going to be interesting," she asks all scandalous.
"What nonsense are you spewing?"
"This project mate. He comes on to you. You won't ask him for any help because you don't want to lead him on. Jeez Manvi! I am your best friend of 9 years. I smell what is going on."
"You are also delusional, best friend of 9 years."
"That would be you."
"Virat is calling..."
"Tell him about Chris and let me know when he blows a fuse."
"You are mad. I will call back in a bit." I hang up and answer Virat's call."
"Hello stranger." I smile.
"Manvi... sorry, were you waiting for my call?"
"Only for the last two days..."
"So sorry baby. Haven't had a wink. We just finished the launch and it went well. I am so relieved."
"That's great news."
"Yep. I miss you, Manvi." I hear him sigh.
"It's Wednesday. Two more days till we meet. Think about that..."
"Yeah, about that...I don't think I can make it this friday."
"Oh?"
"We are all required to stay online till the next week. A launch this big, needs a round the clock support team for the first week. I am sorry Manvi. I will be working this weekend basically."
