"Are you sure it's ready to be used?"
"It'll be fine, don't worry. Now- do the check list."
"Clothes,"
"Check,"
"Tents,"
"Check,"
"Food,"
"Check,"
"Okay I think we have everything. Do we need to go over to rules guys?" Leon stood proudly in his bell bottom jeans and tan vest with ruffled edges.
"No electronics, no violence, no revealing what time period we're from-," Rufus repeated, while continuing to roll his eyes.
"Okay don't be a smart ass. We can't fuck this up. We're going to have fun but we can't risk altering our or anyone else's time line." Leon was like the dad of our group. He kept everything together and always knew the right things to say. He was an engineering student with a high IQ. He was the one who posed the idea of time travel to us. We thought he was crazy but when him and Rufus began working on it, we began to have faith in him. We would stop by his dorm after class and check on the progress. Some days, we lost hope because of how slow everything felt. As time went on though, we felt like they were getting closer to being done. Then finally, 2 weeks ago, Leon announced to us that it was done. We were all sitting in the common room watching old reruns of looney tunes.
"Guys!" Leon came rushing in and stood in front of the tv.
"Leon, Move! We're watching tv!" Lila groaned, trying to see past him.
"I think this is more important than bugs bunny, Li." He put his hands on his waist, legs spread shoulder length apart.
"Okay fine. What is it?" I sighed.
"It's done."
"What is?" Becca crosses her legs on the couch, munching on some taki's.
"The time machine." We sat in silence for a moment. Seconds later we were all rushing to Leon's door to see his and Rufus' creation. When he let us in, we stood in awe of how complex yet intriguing it looked.
"How do you know it works?" Garrett questioned.
"This is how." He pressed a button on the side of the machine as a whirring sound filled the room. In seconds, an out of breath Rufus came stumbling out of the machine.
"Fuck!" Rufus exclaimed.
"What happened?" Said Becca.
"I just ran a mile with Bruce Jenner."
"You mean Caitlyn Jenner."
"No, 1976 Bruce Jenner. It was fucking amazing!" He collapsed on his bed. We stood with our mouths hanging open.
"You're fucking with us." I stood in disbelief.
"No we're not. Look, Rufus and I had an idea. Remember when we watched that documentary on Woodstock and you said, 'I wish we could have gone to Woodstock.' Well.. we can. So let's make a trip out of it."
"You mean just... go?" Becca asked, confused.
"Yeah, I mean- it's not like any of you have anything to do this weekend." He wasn't wrong. Most of us were engineering, psychology, and art majors with good heads on our shoulder. We were the kids who got assignments done way before it is actually due. For me, I was already 2 lessons ahead of everyone else so I spent most of my time watching short films, writing, or staying in my room with the lights off watching anime. When Leon wasn't working on his time machine, he would spend his time playing games on his laptop or binge watching, "That 70s Show," even though he's seen every season a million times. Rufus kind of just did his own thing. He smoked all the time and couldn't go 5 minutes being sober during the day so he just always kept his dab pen on him. Yet somehow, he could still function enough to create all the blueprints for the time machine. Becca was an art major so she was always making something. She always made clothes for us to try on and model for her. Sometimes she would make us sit while she drew our portraits and ate chips. It was ridiculous the amount of chips she ate and was still considered healthy. She never thought highly of herself but she always saw the best in everyone. Laila was a psychology major and spent most of her time picking peoples brains and asking questions she already knew the answer to. She always wanted to help people in some way or another, whether it was giving advice, being a mediator, or just listening. She was also a vegan and tried her best not to force it on us but it proved difficult for her when we would go out to fast food restaurants with not that many options. Now, Garrett... Garrett was a whole different fucking story. He just... you'll see as the story progresses.
"Okay, so just to reiterate- We are not making more than one trip if you forget anything here. And we all knows to bring dry stuff for the last day?" Everyone nodded. "Okay, grab your bags and let's go." We all grabbed our belongs and stood in a line, waiting to enter the machine. The machine could only transport one person at a time. Leon went first and stood facing us while In the machine. "We'll all land in the same place so just look for me.... well, here we go." He pressed a button on his small remote as he disappeared in front of our eyes.
"Is this... going to hurt?" Becca asked as Rufus entered the time machine.
"It's only breaking down your body into tiny particles then putting them back together... so it'll hurt a little." He pressed the button on the inside of the machine. Thank god there was more than one button. After he disappeared, next went Garrett, then Becca, Laila, and lastly me. I took a deep breath as I pressed the button on the side of the machine. Suddenly I was on my back in the grass, looking up at the sky. My back ached as I stood up, dusting off my jeans.
"Fuck, you said it would only hurt a little." I groaned, glaring at Rufus.
"You're just weak." He rolled his eyes. I ignored his insensitive comment and looked around. We stood in the trees bordering the property, facing the trampled fences. Once we made sure we had everything, we began walking towards the sea of people. Richie Havens was on stage playing, "Get Together." Rufus lit his blunt and passed it around the group. This was gonna be one hell of a weekend.
