I write using P.O.V, I will indicate when, this is just to add extra sides to the story. The chapters will get longer, however for now they're only 1/2 pages long! Please subscribe, the more readers the better! @giki18 made the cover, go to them if you want one!
It was the day of the reaping. Every child in the district were walking to the square. I clutched Prim’s hand tightly and held her close. It was her first year, she was safe. I had to explain to her about what they do. How they only know you by your blood, nothing else. To them, youre just a name. I guess this scared her more than anything. She’d turned a pale green colour, her eyes shallow. I tried to reassure her as we had to split. “Ill find you after Prim! Don’t worry” I shouted to her. Her name was in once. Only once.
We were all divided off in age and gender groups, but I managed to lock my eyes with Gale. I was worried about him, this was his final year but his name was in there so many times. Soon everyone was on the stage. Except Haymitch. He’s probably drunk somewhere. I feel sorry for him, ever since he’s won hes got to know tributes, then they never come out. It must be hard for him. I hear a loud bang echo round the square and the place goes quiet. Effie Trinket is stood tall, with a bright pink wig on, the usual Capitol style. She introduced us to the film they play every year, reminding us why were here, why the hunger games is here. As soon as its over she gets too it. “As usual. Ladies first!” she screeches down the mic. She swirls her hand around the bowl with the names in and pulls out a slip.
“Primrose Everdeen” This name bounces around in my head numerous times before it registers. Im paralysed with shock and disbelief, unable to move, watching my little sister walk to the stage. All these things running through my head. I cant do it. Any of it. I throw my hands over my ears and fall to the floor. “Im sorry Prim” I mutter.
All my life I’d been fighting to keep her alive. For this. For this! I can hear these words screaming thoughout my head. Thats when I did it. Pushing trough the crowd to the enter path. Looking up to see Prim tucking her little duck tail in. “Quack” I hear in my head. “PRIM! No Prim come back here!” I scream as I reach forward and pull her into me, wrapping my arms around her. The peacekeepers came, dragging me back off her, I tried to fight but there was no use. “I VOLUNTEER!” I shout breaking free from their grasp. “I volunteer as tribute.” I say as carmly as possible. I heard Prim scream no in the background. Silence. Thats all I heard for a second. Nothing. Thats when I saw Gale run upto me, grabbing Prim. He gave me an encouraging smile, he was terrible at hiding his sadness. He was about to burst into tears any second. “It’ll be okay” I mouth to him as he carries Prim off to my mother screaming. I straighten my dress and begin to walk up to the stage, climbing the steps. Effie ushered me towards the mic. “Oh look at this, our very first volunteer!” Effie says. “Whats your name?” “Katniss Everdeen” I reply, choking down the tears. “I bet by damn that was your sister, not trying to steal her glory are you?”. I slowly shake my head before dropping it. I couldn’t believe what I’d just done. I just wanted to cry, but I couldn’t. “How about a round of applause for our volunteer?” Effie says all excited. Not one person clapped. Not the people betting on who’d get picked, nor the people who were past caring. They just stared up at me. Raising their left 3 fingers to their lips before raising it into the air, an old district sign, a gesture rarely used, meaning thanks, admiration, and good-bye to a loved one.
Now it was the boys turn. I couldn’t bear it. ‘It could be Gale’ I thought. I close my eyes praying its not as Effie walks back to the mic with the slip in her hands. “This years male tribute from district 12 is...” she paused, ripping the strip, “Peeta Mellark.”
