"Weren't you already meant to click off already, missus?" Lesley, my workmate asks me as I come into the staff room.
"I know, I know" I say rolling my eyes. "I'm going now" I grin as I grab my coat and bag.
"See you tomorrow, girl" she shouts after me as I leave the room once again, stopping at the check in/check out station stamping myself out and leave the fire exit. I work at target in San Antonio city centre as a sales assistant, it's not the best job in the world—but it pays the bills and puts food on the table.
There's a chill to the air that makes my body come alert, something that I'd learnt when I was in care, I look up and down the alley, cursing myself for not going out the front entrance. I close my coat over, putting my hat on covering my ears from the bite of the cold and make my way towards the bus stop.
I'm nearly at the end of the alley way when I feel tingles on the back of my neck, that awareness I learnt again from being subjected to harm in foster care. I clutch my handbag tightly against my body and start to walk faster when I hand comes out of no where scaring me so much that I scream, and scream loud.
The man grabs for my handbag. "Give me the bag and you won't get hurt, bitch" he hisses.
"I don't think so" I growl as I wrestle with him for my handbag that's when I hear a voice. "Leave her the fuck alone" I hear them growl, I look to see a boy who can't be much older than ten years old holding a metal pole in his hands like a baseball bat. The robber looks at the kid, taking his focus off me. I use his distraction and kick him full force in his cock 'n' balls.
He groans in pain dropping to his knees whilst holding his pecker, when a surge of anger comes over me, using my handbag the very thing he was trying to steal from me and start hitting him with it. "And that's what you get from trying to steal from a lady" I hiss at him as I hit him over the head repeatedly.
The adrenaline is quickly zapped from my body and I feel a little weak. My arms go limp to my side as the thief lies there still.
"You okay, lady?" The boy asks me.
I look to the boy who's eyes are shining with concern for me. "Yes, Thankyou for coming to my rescue young man" I say softly.
He shrugs, he cheeks blushing slightly. "Was nothing" he replies.
"Oh, I think not" I grin. "You're my hero"
His face morphs into a grimace, shuffling his feet with nerves.
"Well, does my hero have a name?" I ask him with a smile as I approach him.
He looks at me, really looks at me, like he's studying me and sighs heavily. "Colton," He says.
Colton...
"Well now," I say happily. "That's a good strong name that is" I grin at him hoping I can get something from him.
He smiles brightly at me, that smile goes straight to my heart when we hear my attacker groan. Colton grabs me and pulls me with him, running away from my attacker before he wakes up. "Where are we going, Colton?" I say as I try to keep up with him.
"Shhhh" He growls. "We don't want him knowing where we're going"
A few minutes later, we approach an abandoned warehouse, Colton opens the door and pulls me inside. "We should be safe, for now," He says breathlessly looking out the little hole in the wall.
