Chapter 1

I chewed on the eraser of my pencil, while gazing at the clock. Come on! I thought, willing it with my mind to go faster. Why couldn’t this class just last ten minutes? Why did I have to sit in a plastic chair attempting to fight the urge to doze off? I swear, it’s cruel and unusual punishment!

I was sitting in a stupid and pointless, but mandatory, class. Chemistry. I mean, really. Who cares that there are over 100 elements on the periodic table? It wasn’t like I was going to use that anytime soon. Oh well, it wasn’t like I was going to remember what this guy was droning on about tomorrow.

The bell decided to, finally, be a good sport and ring. I scrambled to gather my stuff and managed to resist skipping out of class. Yeah, that was how happy I was to get out of there. Science and I just weren’t compatible.

I got to my locker and put in my combination. As soon as I got my locker open, two hands appeared out of nowhere and covered my eyes.

“What the—!” I could hear movement and shuffling somewhere to my right. Someone giggled and I heard someone else shush them. I smiled and let out a laugh. “Ok, someone tell me what’s going on. You know I can hear you.” Then, just like that, the hands were gone.

“SURPRISE!!!!!” I looked around and I saw everyone. All my friends had gathered around. “HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HOLLY!!!”

Amber was holding a small cake in her hands. My friend Van (Vanessa) was standing next to her trying to hold in her excitement. I assumed she was the one who had giggled earlier. Next to her, Rodney was grinning and his twin brother had his hands in his pockets, rolling his eyes at Van. Jordan, who, apparently, was the one that had covered my eyes, was leaning against the lockers.

          “What?” I said, confused.

“Happy birthday, Holly,” Jordan said. “Honestly, it can’t be that hard to keep up.” He paused. “Please tell me you didn’t forget your own birthday.”

“Sorry to disappoint, I did. I’ve been too busy to even remember my own name.” Jordan shook his head and shot me a disappointed look.

“Well, happy birthday anyway.” I turned back to the group.

          “Thank you, guys. Seriously.”

“Don’t thank us just yet. Just have some cake while we get out your birthday present,” Van said.

“Oh, guys. Really, you didn’t have to. The cake would’ve been enough,” I said as Amber handed me the cake. It was my favorite kind, the chocolaty kind. I looked back up and saw Rodney and Van holding out a gift wrapped box that hadn’t been there before. “What is it?” I asked cautiously. When it comes to my friends, they tend to be a little...dramatic. For example, one year, they gave me a balloon for my birthday. Then it exploded guacamole in my face.

“How about you open it and find out, Amber said now standing next to Royce and Jordan. I reluctantly took the box from them and put it on the ground. I carefully peeled the wrapping paper off and revealed the contents of the box. I gasped. No! Way! It was a Karaoke Machine. I had been begging my parents for one for weeks.
