Chapter Six
Sunday mornings were the time I always slept in to the afternoon but it was different today. I woke up at six a.m. and got ready in time for seven a.m. mass. I wore one o my sweaters that had a zigzag pattern through it and a pair of jeans, it was could again today and it really struck me when I snuck out through my window and started walking to he church. I felt the cold air work though my body and leaves cold puffs of air out through my mouth. I wonder why my family are atheists and are so devoted in not believing in anything. I wish I could ask them but if I did it would turn into another historical debate and someone would always end up infuriated at the end of the day. Perhaps they found it hard to believe that one man created the world, I find it a little hard to believe as well. And I find it hard to believe that the Virgin Mary could have a baby and still remain as a virgin so she would no be stoned to death. It would be interesting to find out the truth of how the world was formed and why we are here today but I could never know the answer, it was the fact of like. I will never know how the world was formed and whose theory was right out of religion and scientists. For now I believed in Father Peter’s guidance, he was helping me a lot and I was grateful for it. I arrived at the church and walked into the heated nave area. I was greeted by Father Peter who told me to take a seat on a pew, so I did. Father walked up onto the platform in font of the church and walked behind the altar and begun the mass.
“In the name of the Father and of the Spirit and of the Holy Spirit…” Father projected to the rest of the people in the church.
“Amen” The rest of the people in the church replied. I have never been to a mass before so I was confused to what to do and say. Father started talking again but I was not paying attention to what he was saying, I was looking at what the other people were doing and saying. After about a minute we sat down and Father started talking about our sins and our Brothers and Sisters, I had no idea to whom he was referring. I looked at the board, which had a projection projecting on to it. This section of the mass was called the Penitential Act. The rest of us in the church continued to stand, sit, kneel and repeat in a sort of pattern that I got used to after the hour long mass. I felt different after the mass ended; it was interesting to hear what was written and more interesting to hear the Homily. The Homily was particularly interesting as it was the priest’s turn to tell us what he thought and how we can all is better people and is better followers of Jesus and God. I was still a little confused about that part; I kept getting confused between both of them. As the people proceeded out of the pews and kneeled to the altar before they walked out I did the same but stuck around in the nave. After a couple of minutes of waiting towards the front of the church where the altar stood Father Peter walked up to me and was happy to see me, I was happy to see him too, he was the person I could trust the most and I found him interesting not only because of who he is but his beliefs.
“How was it?” He asked as he walked over to his office and I followed along.“It was a little weird at first but it got better and I found it quite interesting. I think I might come back next week” I replied and he turned around and smiled. He was happy by the comment I replied with. He opened the door to his office and he proceeded in first and I followed after him. As per usual he sat down on his chair and I took a seat on the opposite end of his table where two chairs sat. I took a seat on the left one I always sat on every time I came to talk to him. We both sat down and father started coughing and took a sip of water from his glass, which was always full of water every time I came.
“These masses are starting to drown the energy out of me,” He laughed and I laughed along with him. It seemed as Father was starting to age and was slowing down in life. I wanted to ask him how old he is but I did not want to waste time on irrelevant topics. “I am very glad you came Abby” He exclaimed as we looked at each other after he finished sipping his water.“You seem really excited that I came, why?” I asked a little puzzled to why he was so excited of my presence.
“The youth now a days are losing faith. They are all too busy on their games and their parents do not help the situation either. They are all city rats who are busy to come to church for an hour once a week, your family is not the best either but I am glad you came, I really am.”
